Project Update — August 30, 2019
Primary School ready for L-C student use, referendum work continues at H.S.
With the start of the 2019-20 school year next week, work at the Luxemburg-Casco Primary School was wrapping up, while staff at the L-C High School building was readying for students with the larger construction project continuing around them. The entire outer shell of the new gymnasium, formed by Spancrete® panels, now is in place. Steel trusses for the roof are being put into place with the roof to follow.
“When you start a school year with a construction project at the same place, it’s very complicated,” says
Luxemburg-Casco School District Superintendent Glenn Schlender. “The district staff has done a great job of working with Nexus Solutions, which is managing the project."
Work at the Luxemburg-Casco Primary School largely is complete, save for a handful of punch items which will be completed on one of the first teacher in-service days, according to Mike Frailing, the project manager from Nexus Solutions.Foremost among the work was the school’s new secure entrance, which now is open. The receptionist, along with Principal Pete Kline and the school nurse, were in the process of moving into their new spaces during the last week of August.“We’re thankful to have the new secure entrance in place,” Schlender adds. “It’s a big step for our Primary School as we continue to revise and review our student safety plan.”The Primary School’s expanded kindergarten wing also was fully operational this week. Teachers were readying for the start of school, happy with their new space.“The kindergarten team will benefit from having the entire grade in one wing,” says Autumn Lensmire, in her fourth year as a kindergarten teacher at L-C Primary School. “The teachers can collaborate better by having all of the students together. The new classrooms feel like they have always been here – everything matches up well.”
Teacher involvement in the planning process was an important part of the Primary School project turning out so well, according to Sara Frey, an L-C kindergarten teacher for 16 years. “Everything we said we wanted at the planning meeting, we got,” Frey says. “Storage, pocket doors and plain tile in the hallway all are things we asked for and received.”Freshly paved Primary School playground areas have been lined for an assortment of games and are ready for student use.Over at the High School, different types of work are continuing.Leveling around the gymnasium addition, including a new bus drive, was a major effort this week with completion important before the school year begins. J Jadin Trucking & Excavating brought in load after load of soil to raise and level the area.
Nearby, the Marcks Lane bus drive was fully striped and ready for use. Grass seed has been placed in the adjacent berms. All of the asphalt parking areas at the Primary School also were complete.
The new gymnasium’s roof trusses were assembled last week and being put into place this week. All of the trusses are expected to be in place by the end of next week. Roof decking will follow, and it is anticipated that the gymnasium addition will be fully enclosed by early October.
The area adjacent to the gymnasium addition where the new Wrestling Room is planned has been leveled and is ready for the start of construction. Steel is expected to arrive on the job site Sept. 9, with work beginning shortly afterward. The exterior, interlocking panels of the Wrestling Room also have been chosen.
Within the new gymnasium space, areas where new locker rooms and restroom areas will be are visible by the plumbing which is in place. The outline of the new School Store also can be seen.Inside the existing High School building, new hallway ceilings, sprinkler systems and high-efficiency LED lights have been installed. Plumbers worked to finish up the new girls’ locker room this week with the addition of accessories like mirrors, soap dispensers and partitions.Larger garage doors for the auto shop area are in place, with new lifts having been installed inside.The four new boilers have arrived on the job site and initial aspects of installation have begun. Full-scale installation of the boilers is anticipated to begin the week of Sept. 9, with completion expected by the end of the month.Outside at the new Middle School building, expected to be complete for the 2020-21 school year, the pouring of footings has begun.This week the High School temporarily moved its main entrance to Door 4, at the far northern end of the building, due to increasing construction activity at the nearby job site for Middle School.
