Mapping the Elephant: Illegal Drugs in South Carolina

Summary of Study

This study encompassed the history of drug laws; drug use statistics in SC; the criminality of drug use, collateral damage, drug courts, and substance abuse treatment in the state; & possible alternatives to current policy. We adopted positions which formed a proposal for consensus by LWVSC, whose position is now: “Illegal drug use should be considered a public health issue. Drug use and addiction should be addressed by substance abuse treatment and education programs instead of incarceration."
