This page is about the technical workings of Magic. For In-Roleplay use and Kinesis, see the Battle & Kinetic Guide
This page is a technical page that goes further into depth than any Clan cat would need to know. Please do not use this information to metagame. The Clans, at most, know of the two types of magic, magical exhaustion, recuperation and explosion, and the existence of Souls.
Magic exists in the world as two different types- Earthly and Holy energy.
Holy energy exists as pure energy generated by the World, but it also exists as a creation of the Divines- it's the core of all creature's magical being. When a creature runs out of Holy energy, they die. Some creatures have an overabundance of Holy energy, powerful enough to meddle with the world, such as the Divines, or smaller amounts, such as Sprites. All creatures have some amount of Holy energy, however, be it derived from creation by the divines or creation by the World. Holy energy exists as a pure energy source that can do most anything, however, the Clan Divine's unique holy energy is divided into four categories- Floral, Aero, Geo, and Aqua.
Earthly energy, by comparison, is derived solely from the activity of Arcana. It is a much slower form of magic in comparison to Holy energy, old, heavy, and powerful. Earthly energy forms in growing plants, from worms rummaging through soil, rushing rivers, thunderstorns, and high winds. It's a constant, low hum in the earth. Many magical creatures source their energy from the earth, Clan cats included.
These energies are what make up a large portion of a creature's Soul.
A Magical Marker is a type of marker that determines what type of energy a creature should absorb from the World. This signature passes down from parent to child, and is how, in the Clans, kittens get their magical type from their parents.
Creatures derived largely from Holy energy have no Magical Marker, instead being able to harness and utilize all magic that is generated by Arcana. With the exception of beings created by the four Divines- who typically bear the Holy Magical Markers of Floral, Aero, Geo, and Aqua.
Unlike the Divines' Holy energy, Earthly energy has its own unique set of magical markers that cover most everything- such as electrical, fire, frost, and more. Certain creatures that have evolved with Arcana itself display these wild markers, such as Embolins and Ampelopes.
Earthly and Holy energy exist in tandem with one another in every single creature- they both need one another in order to function properly, or else they will simply dissolve. Certain creatures are able to handle more of one or the other, but in most cases, creatures have much more Earthly energy than Holy. Only a small portion of Holy energy is required to harness Earthly energy, and this is what is used to perform attacks and moves in what the Clan cats know as Kinesis. Large attacks take up large amounts of both reserves, leading to exhaustion. While a total loss of Holy energy results in death, this is very uncommon, as creatures lose consciousness whent hey have reached critically low magical reserves.
Creatures can absorb both types of energy from the world. However, it is a careful balance, and skewing it too far one way or the other results in heavy repurcussions. Magical items, such as Farrunner tails, Chimetail Shrew bells, and Embolin scales can be used as a boost of a 'pick-me-up' in emergency cases when a cat has become devoid of magical energy. Using them without the proper knowledge can result in the tilting of a cat's internal balance, causing fatigue and nausea at best and death at worst. Using these magical items en masse or improperly can result in a sudden, explosive burst of magical energy, as it is too much for a cat's body to take in all at once. This explosion is disruptive to cats and wildlife nearby, and may result in fires, decay, injury, and other unexplainable phenomena. Sudden overuse of kinesis or extreme output from inexperienced creatures may also result in a sudden magical explosion.
While it is very difficult to disrupt a creature's internal balance, it is still possible, and causes painful conditions.
When a high shift in Holy energy occurs, a creature's form begins to warp. Painful growths, new limbs, open wounds and sores may occur alongside headache, nausea, and illness. Burnlike-wounds and the molting of feathers or shedding of fur is also a common side effect. A creature's magical marker will also grow rapidly out of order, leading to their traits deforming or growing rapidly without cease until they have succumbed to their condition.
A high shift in Earthly energy is typically less lethal, but equally debilitating. Earthly magical markers may also go out of order, resulting in creatures that cannot stop zapping themselves, limbs turning to wood, or bodies that crumble away into dirt and mud. At the extremes, creatures begin to fade away into the earth, becoming a ghost of what they once were. This energy fades away to be recycled, and all that remains is shaped underbrush, statues, an odd tide, or fur in the wind.
Souls are what keep every creature on Arcana alive and running. Souls are a combination of Magic, Memories, and Personality- all carefully interwoven between one another to protect them from tampering. Celestial beings and their creations are said to be able to see and manipulate Souls, as they are gentle enough to split the threads apart, so that one aspect is not impacted by removal or tampering with another. Wild beasts may be less kind. Damaging of a Soul can result in death at worst, and at best, removal and blurring of memories, altered personality, and a strong hit to magical capability.
Normally, a Soul is incubated within a growing creature before they are born. However, Sprites are known to rest within creatures that have yet to form a Soul, or may settle in other life not originally designed to have a Soul, such as in the case of Garden Sprites.
The core of a Soul is made up of Holy Energy, and is where a creature's Magical Marker(s) are stored. These markers tie a soul to its body. Certain creatures are capable of taking Souls for their own, such as Wraiths or Overseers, but most magical types are restricted to the creatures that have evolved alongside them. If a sprite has the dominant marker of Floral Holy Energy, then it would prefer to settle within flowers, Boaquets, or VerdureClan kittens, for instance. A Soul cannot occupy a space that is already harboring one, nor can it naturally rest with an incompatible body- not without a lot of energy to force it in. A Sprite formed of Earthly electrical energy would be unable to reside within a bug, for instance. Certain creatures may contain multiple different Magical Markers. It is unclear as to why HalfClan cats are unable to develop two Magical Markers in the way other creatures are.
Artificial, or False, Souls are able to be created by celestial beings out of pieces of another, which blossoms into its own identity. Combining a piece of Soul with magic and organic material can create new life moldable by its creator. Only the Divines and their close creations are able to create this type of life, but rumor has it there are creatures within the Farlands that can do such a feat.
Nowadays, only specific creatures come with the risk of Soul tampering.
Magic and Souls are a part of the greater cycle of Arcana- one of life, death, and rebirth. All magical energy returns to the greater World as life comes to an end, only to return back to take form as another creature once more.
When magical energy fizzles out, often times, it goes in two directions- either to form a Sprite, or to fade into the greater mass of energy used to perform kinetic moves or form a Soul for a new creature.
In the case of Clan cats, however, their Soul is broken up into pieces, extending this cycle by a few stages. When a Clan cat dies, there is three places that they can land in- The Garden of Stars, The Forest of Forgotten Shadows, and The Inbetween. For the two former, upon being judged by Death, a cat's Soul is split, taking their personality and a portion of memory with them to The Garden of Stars, while the rest rejoins the cycle. Stuck Souls find themselves in a location know as The Inbetween- where they linger aimlessly until hunted by a Wraith, or until they fade. All dead cats eventually fade, to which the last of their energy rejoins the cycle.
