General Server FAQ
How does server time relate to irl time?
We operate in real-time! Except Kits, who operate on double time! (1 month = 2 moons for Kits)
How old does a cat have to be to participate in a field day?
9 moons at least, and no younger!
My Apprentice is reaching 9 moons old, who do I contact for a field day?
Check the roster and find out who your specialty role Captain is, then ping them in the Clan’s OOC chat!
My mentor isn’t interacting with me a lot. What should I do?
Roleplays between mentors and Apprentices aren’t something that is required. However, we understand a lot of people enjoy developing their young cats through roleplaying with their mentors. If that’s the case, contact the Clan Leader and they will happily reassign you to somebody more active!
As a Captain, am I supposed to pick a specialty role Apprentice every Field Day?
Nope! It’s actually encouraged that you DON’T choose just anybody, unless they consecutively have high rolls. To be a specialty role is uncommon, so try and make your Captain super picky about who they let in! In the instance that your Captain wants to bring an Apprentice onto the team, they first need to discuss it in DMs with the other Captains. If there are no slots left for a SR position, you as the Captain ARE allowed to still accept new Apprentices if they do well during their field day. The cap for SR ranks is a soft lock- meaning once the slots are full, it just means no new adults can be added into the rp, but Apprentices can still naturally join through field days.
What are the benefits of being a server booster?
Server boosters get one free Locked Role Key! You may also choose between a Phoenix Feather or a Loaded Die item. These items do not renew upon re-boosting, and are instead a one-time gift! These items are not applied to a user’s inventory, and are instead ‘invisible’ until use. They can also be added to the inventory of a user upon request.
How do Apprentices get mentors?
They are chosen by the Leader! Their word is final unless you have the Predestined Pair item from the shop. As long as both mentor and Apprentice agrees, the Clan Leader can be DM'ed about the pairing.
What do I need to do to make my Apprentice a Guardian?
Your Apprentice needs to reach the age of 12 moons and experience a Guardian Assessment before they are allowed to become a Guardian! Guardian Assessments are performed at 12 moons, usually the day before receiving their name, just to make sure they are ready to make that step in life. Even Specialty Rank Apprentices need to pass this assessment in order to graduate.
What are breaks and how do they work?
Breaks are simply a break from the roleplay! To get one, you first need to simply react to the prompted message pinned in the break channel to obtain the ‘on break’ role. This lets everybody know you’re on break by changing the color of your name. Next, you will need to fill out all the information outlined in the pinned message- as mentioned, be as vague as you'd like. Then you’re all done! If you do not do both of these steps, you will not be excused from activity checks or high rank duties. The only thing that cancels a break is roleplaying- you ARE allowed to post art, stories, talk in chat, send out patrols ooc, etc etc! When your break is over, head back to the break channel and remove your react on the break role message to remove your role and announce your return in the same channel. Then you’re free to pop back into the rp!
What does it mean to NPC a character? How do I go about doing that?
NPCing your cat essentially means you are getting rid of your cat without killing them. Killing can be a lot of work and drama and you might wanna bring this cat back someday, and some folks just like their cats to fade into the existence of being a background character, which is the purpose of NPCing a cat! NPC cats can be mentioned offhand, but CAN'T be roleplayed! If you ever want to re-add a NPC’ed cat to the roleplay, feel free! Just resubmit them as if they were a new cat! To NPC a kitty, simply submit a ticket, and let us know who you are NPCing and why. This reason can be as vague as you want, and as many kitties as you'd like- there's no limit on NPCing cats.
What types of patrols do Specialty Role (SR) Captains send out?
SR Captains send out patrols pertaining to their rank. This means they don’t really send out things like common border or hunting patrols, they send out specific jobs. Gardener Captains might send a patrol to tend to the gardens, scare off pests, harvest honey and crops, etc! Aviator Captains might send a scouting patrol to survey the land, making note of where packs of predators/prey are, ensure there’s no smoke clouds, and putting out any fires that might be nearby! They also might go on group hunting patrols to take down large flying prey. Miner Captains might send patrols to dig new tunnels, reinforce current ones, clean tunnels, map out the existing ones, and escorting regular Guardians through! And lastly, Diver Captains might send out scouting patrols to survey the reef, make note of where predators and prey are, farm for seaweeds and shellfish, as well as exploring deeper waters for supplies, herbs, and prey! They also go on group hunting patrols to take down bigger pieces of prey. SR ranks are allowed and encouraged to bring others outside of their rank on these patrols. Apprentices are often brought along so they can learn about the rank before their field days, and Leaders might be brought along due to their powerful kinesis. Guardians are less likely to come on these patrols as they have their own duties to attend to, but it’s not impossible.
What is the basic herb knowledge for non-Healers?
Each Apprentice is taught very basic herbs; Cobwebs to stop bleeding, borage as an antibiotic, and dock to help scratches.
How many Apprentices can my Healer cat have?
Typically since there is only an allowed amount of 4 Healers per Clan, each Healer would be allowed one Apprentice each. The only exception is when there is only one main Healer in the Clan at that time, or one of the Healers state that they would prefer to not take on an Apprentice ever.
Can my cat be based on [insert creature/plant here] !?
VerdureClan cats can only be based on ungulates (deer/antelope/hoofed mammal) and have a few plant species growing on them, CoveyClan cats can only be based on birds, CavernClan cats can be based on insects and arachnids, and TideClan cats can be based on fish, marine mollusks and crustaceans, dolphins, whales, and pinnipeds like seals and sea lions! They can even be extinct/prehistoric, but dinosaurs are not permitted for CoveyClanners.
I want to make my cat based on [insert creature here], but somebody else already made a cat based on that! Can I still base my cat off of that creature?
Just like more than one brown tabby exists in the real world, there’s bound to be cats based on the same critter! Just make sure you don’t copy anybody’s design directly!
Can I submit a Healer Apprentice or a Specialty Role Apprentice?
Unfortunately not! Healer Apprentices are appointed in-rp, and cannot be predetermined. This is to prevent any Healer from being forced/pressured into having an Apprentice before their cat is ready. The only way to become a Healer Apprentice is to show interest in-rp, and maybe the Healer will ask you, *if* they want to take on an Apprentice. But even if your cat expresses interest, it’s not guaranteed they will be chosen. It’s entirely up to the Healer. Specialty Role Apprentices are also decided in-rp, during Field Days.
Can I make a cat that falls outside of the Clan norm? Ex: a lithe CavernClan cat, a bulky CoveyClan cat?
Yup! Body type suggestions are just that; suggestions! Just keep in mind how their body type would affect their environment. A lithe CavernClan cat might not be that strong, and a bulky CoveyClan cat might have trouble flying as well.
I’m unhappy with my character’s design, can I change it?
Totally! Long as you update their ref/description in their bio!
Can I make a cat with parents from two different clans?
Yes! Our mixed magic guidelines are here!
Can a Mixed Magic cat have kits with a cat from another Clan and have a baby with 3 of the Clan’s traits? Can a Mixed Magic cat have kits with another Mixed Magic cat and have a baby with traits of all the Clans??
Nope! Only two types of magic can inhabit one kitty's body at once. For more information, we have a genetics guideline on the creation guide that may help you figure out the results! Punnett squares, yayy!!
What happens if a Clan cat has kits with a loner?
When it comes to Voltaics, they’re too genetically distant from the Clan kitties or your average house cat to have kits. If a Clan cat has kits with a house cat loner, there are a few possible options. Either they could take heavily after one parent or the other- appearing nearly entirely full-Clan or like a house cat- or they could have a mix of traits. Their kinesis wouldn’t be as strong as the average Clan cat’s.
Where are the server bio templates found? Is putting my cat on these templates required?
They’re required if you’re using digital art- if you’re using a photograph, though, it’s not required. You can find these templates pinned in the ⛅-character-bios channel, or alternatively, you can use the commands .templatetide, .templatecovey, .templatecavern, or .templateverdure respectively in the bot channel.
Are Kits born with wings, horns, etc?
The only things that kitties are NOT born with are horns and feathers! Those traits grow within a few moons.
Are there rogues / kittypets / loners?
Yes indeed! Voltaics are one type of loner, a large felid with electrokinesis. All other playable loners are the average housecat- though, many of them are pretty rough and tough due to the conditions out there. More information about them can be found here!
What is the oldest age for a cat?
The oldest cats live up to ~200 moons, which is around 17 or 18 in human years. But due to the dangerous habitat that the Clans inhabit, old age often isn't what kills them.
What is the average age a cat becomes an elder?
Between 120-170 moons is usually when cats retire, however they can choose to retire whenever they feel like they have done their duty to the Clan. A reminder that cats are hardly ever retired due to disability!
Can my character have a pet?
Nope! Clan cats have not truly domesticated any animals, nor are they able to foster friendships with them. However, they often work with other animals; Mossmosets and Gardeners, for example. Gardeners have also learned to master the art of beekeeping- and Divers farm for shellfish!
What cats can glow naturally?
If your character is based off of a species that has the ability of bioluminescence, aka glowing naturally, your character can have it too! However, all CavernClanners have a natural yet dim glow to them due to their gemstones and antenna.
Are Verdureclanners the only omnivores?
Every Clan is omnivorous, they just have different preferences! Verdureclan eats primarily fruits and veggies, while the other clans are primarily carnivorous. Tideclan prefers seafood, of course, but they enjoy a variety of seaweeds and any coastal berries. Coveyclan and Cavernclan also primarily eat meat, but fruits on their territories are often eaten as well- especially by Cavernclanners, as they tend to have a sweet tooth. The only exception to this rule is house cat outsiders, who are obligate carnivores!
Do CoveyClanners have feathers in their fur?
Yup! Their version of sharing tongues, or grooming, is actually preening- they have an oil gland in their jaw that allows them to preen their feathers just as well as birds do! Molting generally happens as the seasons change, and occurs in a gradual, bilateral, symmetrical sequence, so that they’re not left bald and unable to fly. This entire process does not hurt, but can get itchy. It's always good to have a friend to help with pin feathers in hard to reach places!
Do CoveyClanners molt?
Yup! It’s actually a good bonding activity to preen each other! Kind of like grooming each other (sharing tongues) in the original books! Molting generally happens as the seasons change, and occurs in a gradual, bilateral, symmetrical sequence, so that they’re not left bald and unable to fly. This entire process does not hurt.
When are CoveyClan Apprentices developed enough for flight?
Like all things about growing up, it depends! Some cats are late bloomers. Around 6-7 moons, they might be able to have short bursts of flights or be able to glide. But generally speaking, 9 moons is when they can really fly.
If a CavernClanner’s antennae are injured, do they grow back?
Yes and no! They only grow back when partially severed- and if the cat is still growing. If entirely removed, or damaged as an adult, they never grow back!
When do CavernClanner scars geode over, and how long do they last?
When first injured, the geode covers the wound much like a scab- within the first moon or so of healing the geode will be fully developed. Over the next 1 to 2 years, or 12 to 24 moons, the geode will slowly chip away. Eventually, the geode will be almost entirely gone, leaving only a small freckling of crystal and scar tissue in its wake.
If a TideClan cat’s barbels or fins are injured, do they grow back?
Yes! This happens naturally in the wild, torn/tattered fins and barbels will always grow back. However, if the damage at the base of the barbel or fin is too deep, they'll scar over and won't grow back.
Can TideClanners talk underwater?
They can! On top of verbal speaking, body language and signals are also quite important in speaking underwater, especially for Tideclanners without gills.
If my TideClan cat isn’t based on a fish (ex: based on an octopus), can they have the traits of that creature instead of the fins shown in ⭐-character-creation-info?
Nope! They must have all the required traits. The fins can be any shape, however! Minor cosmetic quirks like fish that have a glow, creatures that produce slime, special barbels, etc. are permitted to be reflected on your characters! These, however, are purely cosmetic and do not provide any form of advantage or disadvantage to your character.
Do VerdureClanners have flat teeth like the herbivores they’re based on?
Yes and no! They only have incisors on the upper jaw, and the bottom jaw contains flat, hedge-trimming teeth.
Do VerdureClanners shed their antlers?
Towards mid/end of the wet season, all VerdureClanners with antlers will shed their antlers! Antlers will shed around February - March, leaving behind a little scab. April - May their antlers begin to come back, though it is quite slow at first. Late May - August is the rapid growth state, where horns and antlers come back to their normal state. By September they will be fully regrown! Blood is cut off, and Velvet shedding begins for about 24 hours before revealing the hard keratin beneath. This entire process does not hurt.
Do VerdureClanners shed their tusks, too?
In nature, boars and other tusked animals do NOT shed their teeth, therefore tusked VerdureClanners do not either. This means that if a VerdureClanner broke/lost an antler, it’ll regrow- But if a tusked VerdureClanner chips/breaks their tusk, it DOES NOT come back.
Can VerdureClanners have one horn like unicorns?
Yes, but only if they are based on either the False Unicorn or True Unicorn from the bestiary!
Can VerdureClanners grow fruit?
Yes! But the plants that grow on their pelts will not produce large fruits, only small berries at most. These plants have no nutritional or medicinal value, and can not be planted or grown until their host dies.
