"Self" & Identity

Who am I?

This question sounds simple but can be complex for some people; particularly teens still "finding themselves".

2 things are certain:

1) Who you are today is not who you were two years ago

2) Who you will be two years from now better not be who you are now

Why?  As you grow, you develop in all areas of "PISES".  Your influences and life experiences help create your behaviors and also, your personality.  Ultimately, your  individuality, sense of belonging, learning styles, and overall sense of identity aka "self" are all developed and at times, can be ever changing.  This page helps you to understand the process so that you can be the best you, you can be

"Self"

This section is a general overview.  It contains a slideshow, explanation lecture video and a text based explanation.  As you scroll down, you will see additional articles, websites, resources, featured videos & graphics concerning all 3 of these specific topics.

This slide show covers all the main topics on this page and it was created in the Fall of 2021 by Student Alana Sosa, class of 2023

A Quick, Text-Based overview of "Self" (click arrow)

IDENTITY is often thought to be a synonym for SELF.  Some simplistic definitions appear in the slideshow to the left

In summary, a person with a positive/healthy sense of self recognizes their strengths and weaknesses, their learning styles, and their goals in life (short term at least if not long term), knows what their limitations are and learns to love who they are.

Conversely, a person with a poor sense of self thinks bad about themselves,  A person with a poor sense of self that is too high or too low may push people away .

Our personality is by definition who we are.  It is defined by our genetics from birth, our cultural and family influences and the environment in which we live including our peer groups.   Within the past several years, social media and the internet has largely taken over as the #1 influence in teens decisions, behaviors and often times, how they feel about "self".

To this end,  IDENTITY is the culmination or total picture of our sense of self and our personality that comes from a complex combination of both internal and external factors; many of which are biological while others are most certainly influences by external factors, people and events.   The last 10 years or so has seen a push as never before on social media concerning identity.  Most commonly associated with race, culture, gender or sexual orientation, today's youth commonly seek out labels and specific titles for their sense of "Self" that they feel most closely represents who they are.

These videos are recorded lectures for class content created by Mr. Corabi's virtual courses in the 2020-2021 school year. They are detailed but "basic" and do not include student questions that may change the direction of the lectures/topics

The video is a basic screen capture lecture and summarizes 5 classes

The video is basically Part 2 of the video to the left and gives you advice from the end of the slideshow

The video shouldn't be watched until you study all of the topics in "self".  Created (fall 2020)

Some Final Things to Consider

Partial Poem:   HURT

HURT is a really long poem that speaks about someone's emotional turmoil, struggles and their ups and downs.

It was submitted by a student as a performance for their "I am" poem and was over 300 lines long.  She says she found it online but I could never find the entire thing during any google search.   This "clip from the poem" is the first 6 lines and last 20 or so lines. This small section embodies the essence of the poem and provides hope for the suffering

After your read it  consider the true meaning.  If you can, discuss it with someone else.  When you are ready, click the arrow to see the simple answer to what it means
