Safety in PE & sports

Although you want to have fun, increase your daily level of physical activity, and improve your personal levels of fitness into healthy or optimum levels, you have to make sure you stay safe. Here are some simple but

SUPER IMPORTANT

things to remember to stay safe in Physical Education class

1) FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS- injuries and accidents happen when people don't listen

2) Not sure how to do something? ASK

3) Trying to be creative when a "move", skill, exercise or activity? Make sure it is safe to try

4) Pay attention to our surroundings so you don't hurt others and so people can't accidentally hurt you

5) Refrain from wearing jewelry or hard hair clips

6) WEAR the proper footwear and attire

7) HYDRATE... drink plenty or water or school appropriate sports drinks

8) EAT right. When doing intense activities like the pacer or mile run, eat complex carbs the day before and morning of your activity and eat/drink protein within 30 minutes of finishing.

9) Stretch or warm up: Sometimes you will be told to do dynamic stretches prior to a game or activity

other times, you be told to do the sport/sports skills at a slower or lower level prior to play.

10) Cool down. When class is over and it's time to change, take a few minutes to static stretch and chill before leaving gym for next class

11) Don't over do it: the blanket answer if you are not feeling well, sore or have cramps is "do what you can do". BUT, don't over do it. Soreness is usually okay but it's also can be a sign of overuse. Know your body and don't ouch it too hard

12) Realize..it's just PE class. We're all in this together. Even in competition, "do overs" are great. Make up your own rules, help each other be successful. Don't worry all the time about keeping score and HAVE FUN!!!!!!
