Domestic Violence is defined as "violence towards a spouse" (WebMD). As you may recall from the "Violence & Bullying" section, there are generally 4 types of violence: physical, verbal, emotional & sexual.

Dating or Domestic Violence can have elements of any or all of those categories. This particular page will focus on non-sexual forms of Dating Violence.

According to Love is Respect.org, in addition to physical, verbal, emotional and sexual violence or abuse, "Dating/Domestic Violence can also be perpetrated via Digital Abuse (sometimes placed in Verbal or Emotional) as well as Financial Abuse and Stalking (both forms of Emotional Violence)".

Unfortunately, the vast majority of Dating Violence is perpetrated by males towards females. Physical and Sexual Violence counted for the vast majority of reported cases.

However, a 2014 study of 4,000 adolescent patients ages 14 to 20 seeking emergency care by University of Michigan Health services cited that "dating violence is common and affects both genders". Although that specific article did not go on to list further results, other research has indicated that male-male violence and female -male violence seem to be close to equal "2nd place" scenarios according to a report by the National Coalition against Domestic Violence.
