Kratom

Kratom,

has become increasingly popular as of late to use for pain relief rather than prescription opiates.  It is currently legal in most states and sold over the counter; usually in tobacco shops and medical marijuana dispensaries but can also be found in boutique stores, neighborhood and chain convenience stores.

The general public tends to think Kratom is "completely safe because it's all-natural", (quote taken from a Youtube video posted by Psyched Science).  However, like the same argument often used for pro Marijuana advocates, it is simply not true.  One could certainly say it's less harmful that Opiates, less addicting (if at all), and in small amounts, acts as a stimulant similar to caffeine or nicotine, however, to state it's not harmful because it's all natural is ignorant to the truth.   Although all natural, it is still a substance that provides a drug like effect and should be used with caution.  It does in fact, have some negative and potentially dangerous side effects if not used properly.

Videos about Kratom

SPECIAL NOTE:

There are a TON of videos on YouTube telling you how great Kratom is or how people used it with no harmful effects or showing you how to make teas out of Kratom leaves..etc.  They basically say how great it is.  The videos below speak about the potential risks associated with Kratom's use from scientists and doctors using history and research.  You may note that there are comments placed on each video's page by current or past users.  Many talk about how great Kratom has been or was for them, others venomously oppose the warnings and any side-effects favoring feelings to facts.

OFFICIAL STANCE OF TEACHER:

Although it certainly seems that Kratom may have medical benefits both physically and emotionally to assist people in treating some ailments, illness and conditions, it is still a drug no matter what people want to say.  All Natural or not, there are potential effects of Kratom and people need to be very careful if they are going to use it.  I do not suggest using any drugs, even medications, if you can deal with the condition without them.  You should also not use Kratom or any other substance to self-medicate and treat a condition without discussing with a medical professional and your parents.  If choosing to use Kratom to treat a condition, do as much research as possible and seek reputable stores and dispensaries and make sure to follow all directions exactly as professionals give you. Please keep in mind however that Kratom is not regulated by the FDA and notifications and indications on packages may or may not be accurate.
