There are several types of steroids that naturally occur in the human body. The most known steroids are the sex hormones testosterone and estrogen although, most people do not realize they are steroids.

There are many different types of steroids found in nature, broadly classified as:1
Sex steroids, including estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone
Corticosteroids, which regulates immune functions, and and electrolyte balance
Secosteroids which helps regulate numerous biological functions( usually found in vitamins and minerals)
Neurosteroids, which aide in the synthesis of male and female hormones
Sterols, also known as steroid alcohols, a subgroup of steroids. The most common type of animal sterol is cholesterol, which helps maintain cell membrane integrity
All of the above examples are naturally occurring. Although some can be misused or abused (such as using testosterone to enhance workouts), the most abused type of Steroids are Anabolic Steroids

Anabolic Steroids are synthetic variations of natural male sex hormones (androgens) and often used to boost performance in weight lifting and athletics. Their use for this purpose is generally illegal although, there are specific medical reasons why they may be prescribed
