HIV & AIDS
HIV is a virus that is spread mostly by sexual activity via semen, vaginal and anal fluid, through infected blood, and through the sharing of needles when using drugs such as Heroin. In some places, specifically big urban cities, IV drug use is often the primary method of transmission whereas in most of the world, the primary method of transmission is via sexual activity. A 4th way of transmission is from a mother to her newborn baby.
It is a devastating and terrible disease that had a definite death sentence associated with it in the 80's and early 90s. However, in the mid-90's and 2000's, several treatment breakthroughs were made that now, allow people who are HIV+ to live with the disease for a really long time. Some, can even get to the point that it is "undetectable". The treatment however is very expensive and isn't always covered by insurance. Furthermore, it isn't readily available to everyone in the world or even this country as minorities and low income people are often underinsured or lack the access to quality health care.
Today, the best "treatment" is still prevention so you don't get it.

Other Teachers choosing to use information in this unit should use their discretion based on District Level, Community Level and School Level curriculum guidelines and policies.
It is assumed that students assigned to Mr. Corabi's class or Health Class at the Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush have their parent's permission based on weekly communication via google classroom posts, email or letters given to students for parents/guardians. Note: A child can consent on their own for Sexual Health Education and testing at age 14 in Philadelphia, PA.
Some lessons are required by the School District of Philadelphia via adoption of a program created by the CDC called "3R's".
