We learned on the Bullying page that Bullying is a specific type of violence that is usually placed in the "Emotional" Violence category. We also learned in the Cyber & Internet safety page  .  The sum of the two combined is a vicious and at times, dangerous phenomenon that has changed over time but is overly present in today's middle and high schools.

This page shows the effects of Cyberbullying & gives helpful tips on protecting yourself AND not adding to the Cyber Bullying taking place all around us.

Whereas in the early 2000's-2010's, it was direct attacks on people.  These attacks can be viewed in movies such as "Cyberbully" and "Odd-Girl Out".  Due to those two movies and others like it, School Districts, Counties and States have enacted Cyberbullying Laws or included Cyberbullying/digital harassment in their existing Bullying policies.    This caused a shift from direct attacks (although they still happen) to often hidden or subliminal or attacks using false screen names.

Despite the added policies and laws, the increased ease of finger tip ready instant or near instant electronic communication through text messages, direct messages, social media apps/programs, and other digital means has skyrocketed and so too has Cyber Bullying.

It's prevalence?   A 2019 report on Cohort3 and reported by USA TODAY "shows cyberbullying continues to rise, especially among girlsThe U.S. Dept of Education research shows that three times more girls report being cyberbullied (via text or social media) than boys.".  The report goes on to say that from 2005 to 2017, "the number of reported cyberbullying incidents increased from 11.5% to 15.3%."

Due to the constant bombardment that could occur in a cyberbullying attack, it quite possibly, could have long term psychological and emotional effects that go far beyond the negative impact of "traditional", in-person, physical or verbal bullying.

In addition, people are so quick to have arguments, "fights", give threats and participate in digital drama behind a screen vs in-person.  Furthermore, the internet has become a hot bed for people being attacked for having a view point on many issues that differs from others leading to additional attacks and threats.
