The Youth Risk Behavior Survey, sometimes called the Youth Risk Behavior Study
and most commonly referred to as the YRBS, is a bi-annual survey starting in 1991 conducted at the request of the Center of Disease Control by various
Universities, School Districts and local agencies.
The survey seeks to confidentially determine the decisions/choices and actions/behaviors that teens between the ages of 13 and 19 make regarding health-related decision-making.
The survey tracks answers overall by age and also within subgroups of various demographics and can be viewed by overall numbers, biological sex, grade/age, race/ethnicity, and sexual orientation.
At it's inception, the survey initially focused primarily on Sexual Decision-Making, Tobacco and Alcohol use, Substance Abuse, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Safety.
It has expanded to include questions related to social and emotional health as well.
The survey is completely confidential and the hope from the CDC, is that it's results every two years, can be used to advise middle school and high school Health Education programs, design, create and revise curriculum, focus resources via local department of health services, and strategically act or react for the betterment of teen health nationwide, regionally,
