An Encounter in the Night
7th Day of Winter’s Deep, 8 AC
The dark night air was brisk against the young kender’s skin. Obito shivered off a breeze and stoked the fire a little. As he took his seat on a heavy blanket, he heard a distinct snap in the dark shadows dancing beyond the fire. He reached over and shook Caprica Whitestone’s foot. Caprica, momentarily startled by his touch, reached for her sword and looked about the campsite. Nothing immediately struck her as out of the ordinary accept the kinder who was silently gesturing into the night. They carefully awoke the rest of the party. As Skyleaf and Obito took their guards, Sir Kenneth and Caprica quickly harnessed their armor. Obito and Skyleaf then took flaming torches from the fire and tossed them into the darkness. In the broken torchlight, the silhouettes of several men could be seen on the edge of the night.
As the men stepped into the light, the Black Robe Kite became recognizable in the shadows. Caprica shouted, “Kite! What is the meaning of this! Are you looking for a fight?”
“Why me? No!” replied the mage. “However, I think you may be fighting for your lives!” He laughs with amusement as a shield of light raises around him.
As they stepped into the dim light, Skyleaf fired his knocked arrow at one of the men. Suddenly, they began to change into werewolves. Several werewolves advanced as Obito began chanting. Caprica also began to pray to Kiri Jolith, but a werewolf lashed out and cut her before she could finish her prayer. Kenneth, taking Caprica’s flank, was attacked by three werewolves. One bit his arm while another forced him to the ground by pouncing on top of him. Meanwhile, Skyleaf drew his bow and landed his first shot deep in the chest of a wolf which had attempted an attack. His second shot, splitting the skull of the same wolf confirmed Skyleaf’s arrows were more than a match for the wolves’ hide. He then turned and fired into the face of another nearby wolf. The wolf, who had been in the process of attacking Skyleaf, reeled in pain as the arrow lodged into its’ left cheekbone. Caprica held her ground fast as she fended off blows with her mace and shield. If a wolf was able to touch the paladin, its’ scratches left no noticeable mark. Another wolf found a lucky opportunity and managed to claw into Skyleaf’s arm.
Obito, noticing his illusion had proved useless, lunged past the front line of the wolves and voraciously attacked them from behind. Using his martial skills, he struck first at one and then another wolf. The kender jumped from the first wolf’s back, pushing its’ lifeless body to the ground. Finding his mark on a nearby wolf’s back, he tore into the dog’s flesh, using his momentum to roll over the falling corpse and back into the party’s ranks. Kenneth began a well thought attack which not only hamstrung a wolf, but allowed him to regain his footing. Caprica lunged forward, cracking the skull of one wolf and then another as she carved her way to Kenneth’s aid. The Black Robe began his chanting which brought a great disturbance to the sky. Skyleaf, seeing the mage begin his chant, set about an idea he hoped might protect them from Kite’s spell. He took aim across the back side of the party and dropped the two wolves about to attack Obito with shots to the head. He then tossed a scroll to Obito and yelled, “Anti-magic!”
Obito tumbled to a safe place behind the party and began to read the scroll. Kenneth continued to battle the wolves that remained. Caprica attempted to shield bash Kite. Unfortunately, Kite’s shield protected him and she was thrown nearly on top of Obito. Skyleaf dropped his bow and leapt toward a wolf which was about to attack Obito. Quickly drawing his sword, skyleaf slashed the monster’s neck open. Then, he picked up the body and threw it onto Kite’s shield. The growing lightning bolts in the sky then seemed to strike the wolf body. Kite looked angrily at the party, muttered something but continued casting.
Finally, Obito finished reading, and a shell of light formed around a small area surrounding the kender. Caprica, Skyleaf and Obito were encompassed by the light. Then, at the last second, Obito tossed throwing stars at the Mage. His chi energy was able to pass Kite’s shield and inflict some minor injury to Kite who shouted, “IMPOSSIBLE!” Suddenly bolts of lightning shrieked through the bodies of the dying wolves and Sir Kenneth. While they licked and struck at the shield of energy surrounding Obito, it was unable to pass the shield or harm those inside of it. As the smoke from the burning wolf hair cleared, Caprica found Kenneth in need of immediate attention but still breathing. After the encounter, and tending to the wounded, the party moved camp to a location they felt was safer.
FACTUAL NOTES:
- Apparently Chi Energy is able to pass the special protection spell Kite cast on himself in this encounter.
- Charaters do not necessarily know if anyone was infected by the werewolves
