En la mayoría de los episodios aparecen como secundarios CLAUDIA LONOW, STEVE SHAW, PAT PETERSEN, y, a partir del 4º, también BOBBY JACOBY, TONYA CROWE y JULIE HARRIS, retomando sus personajes anteriores. En el episodio 14 se une al reparto STEPHEN MACHT como JOE COOPER, que continuará hasta finales de la temporada siguiente.

1/32: "THE VIGIL" ("LA VIGILIA")

SID queda paralítico a causa del accidente de coche, y el agente del FBI muere. Sorprendentemente, RICHARD va al hospital para ofrecerle su apoyo a KAREN con el seguro o con un préstamo. Cuando SID entra en coma, KAREN permanece junto a su cabecera. GARY pide a KAREN que le perdone, pero esta lo despide. Finalmente, SID despierta del coma...

SID gets paralyzed due to the car accident, and the FBI agent is killed. Surprisingly, Richard comes to the hospital to offer his support and offers to help Karen with insurance, to loan her money, etc. When SID gets into a coma, KAREN stays by his bedside. GARY asks KAREN to forgive him, but she fires him instead. Eventually, SID awakens from the coma...

2/33: "CRITICAL CONDITION" ("ESTADO CRÍTICO")

SID tiene un coágulo de sangre que le dejará paralítico si no es operado. Existe un riesgo de muerte del 40%, pero obliga a KAREN a firmar la autorización. Luego, KAREN y GARY hacen las paces. Todos los vecinos velan en turnos a la familia durante la operación, pero SID muere y deja a su mujer una cinta en la que le expresa todo su amor:

"Lo único que deseo es lo que ya tengo: despertar a tu lado cada mañana, vivir contigo y los niños...No tengo palabras para expresar lo mucho que significa eso para mí. Si la operación no sale bien, quiero que sepas que no lamento nada. Te quiero, KAREN, y no importa lo que me pase: mi amor por ti nunca morirá."

SID has a blood clot, which will permanently paralyze him unless they operate. There is a 40% death risk, but he obliges KAREN to sign the authorization. Afterward, KAREN and GARY make up. The neighbors all keep vigil with the Fairgates during the operation, and Karen and Gary make up. SID dies in the operating room after expressing his love for his wife on a tape:

"All I really want is what I already have... waking up with you every morning, just living with you and the kids. There's no words to tell you how much that meant to me. If the chance didn't work, I want you to know that I don't have any regrets. I love you, KAREN. And whatever happens to me, my love for you will never die."

3/34: "AFTERMATH" ("LAS CONSECUENCIAS")

Los FAIRGATE se esfuerzan por adaptarse a la nueva situación, a duras penas: MICHAEL tiene miedo de perder también a su madre, y está muy pendiente de ella. ERIC llora dentro del coche antiguo de SID, y se enfada cuando KAREN decide venderlo. DIANA está preocupada porque su madre actúa como un robot y no habla de sus sentimientos. KAREN está tan asustada que se muestra siempre furiosa con todos. En la empresa, despide a ABBY y abofetea a GARY. VAL se enfrenta a KAREN y le dice que está haciendo daño a la gente que quiere, y ella teme explotar si da rienda suelta a sus sentimientos. Cuando visita al bebé de GINGER, ERIN MOLLY, y le piden que sea su madrina, rompe a llorar...

The FAIRGATES are struggling to fit in the new situation, which they hardly do: Michael is terrified that Karen will die, and constantly checks up on her. Eric cries in Sid's antique car and then is very upset when Karen sells it. Diana's upset that Karen is acting like a robot and won't talk about her feelings. KAREN is so scared that she gets angry with everybody all the time, incapable to talk about her feelings. At work, she fires Abby and goes off on Gary and starts slapping and hitting him. Val confronts Karen and tells her she's hurting the people she loves, and she is scared that if she lets herself feel she'll just blow. When she visits GINGER´s baby, ERIN MOLLY, and is asked to be her godmother, she breaks to cry...

GARY y VAL ven a LILIMAE con aspecto de vagabunda por TV, ayudando a detener a un ladrón. VAL la invita a su casa y, al día siguiente, es arrestada por robar en una tienda. El juez la condena a seis meses de libertad condicional, siempre que viva con su hija. ABBY está preocupada por sus hijos y consigue hablar con OLIVIA, pero la llamada se interrumpe enseguida. A partir de entonces, no quiere salir de casa por si vuelve a llamar. Aun así, eso no impide que salga con hombres, pero les pide que se queden a dormir.

GARY and VAL watch a homeless-looking LILIMAE on TV, as she has helped to stop a thief. VAL invites her home, and, next day, she is arrested for shoplifting. The judge gives her six months probation, whenever she stays with her daughter. ABBY is upset and trying to find her children. She answers the phone and it's OLIVIA, but the line goes dead. After that, she doesn't want to leave the house in case OLIVIA calls again. But this doesn't stop her from dating; she just has them sleep over.

5/36: "THE SURPRISE" ("LA SORPRESA")

Gracias a una postal de OLIVIA, los niños son localizados mediante un detective. ABBY acude allí y se las arregla para que JEFF vuelva a enamorarse de él y acceda a casarse de nuevo. El jefe de RICHARD le pide que contrate a prostitutas para sus clientes y así lo hace. El día de la boda, aparece un juez con una orden de alejamiento que le prohíbe volver a ver a sus hijos o será detenido por secuestro. ABBY asegura a KAREN más tarde:

"El me hizo daño. A mí nadie me hace daño."

Thanks to a postcard sent by OLIVIA, the kids are tracked down by a detective. ABBY goes there, manages to make JEFF fall in love with her again and agrees to marry him. RICHARD's boss asks him to procure prostitutes for clients and he does. On the day of the wedding, a deputy shows up and serves JEFF a restraining order so he can't see his children or else he will be arrested for kidnapping. KAREN later tells ABBY that she really hurt JEFF. ABBY replies:

"He hurt me. Nobody does that!"

Un ex novio de KAREN, TEDDY, llega de visita convencido de que DIANA es hija suya, cosa que niega KAREN. Pero al descubrir que sufrió el rechazo de sus hijos naturales, le deja pensar que podría ser el padre. Sin embargo, KAREN enseña a DIANA una foto de la abuela de SID, que se parece mucho a ella. RICHARD regala a LAURA un coche nuevo en Navidad, pero SCOOTER se presenta con un Mercedes nuevo para ella. VAL está preocupada por los recuerdos que guarda de la muerte de su padre y el abandono de su madre. GARY le dice que LILIMAE sólo tenía 14 años cuando se casó y que debería darle una oportunidad. Cuando le regala una colcha que ha tejido, madre e hija hacen las paces.

One of KAREN´s former boyfriends, TEDDY, calls on the Fairgates' certain that DIANA is his daughter, which KAREN denies. But when she learns that he went through the rejection of his own children, she lets him think that he might be her father. However, Karen shows Diana a photo of Sid's grandmother, who looks exactly like Diana. Richard gives Laura a new car for her Christmas gift, but then Scooter comes by with a brand new Mercedes for her. Val is upset by past Christmas memories of her when her father died and Lilimae abandoned her. Gary reminds Val that Lilimae was only 14 when she got married, so Val should give her a break. Lilimae gives Val a quilt and they make up.

Los AVERY planean un viaje romántico, pero deben cancelarlo cuando él recibe el encargo de organizar una fiesta con prostitutas. LAURA se acuesta con SCOOTER. En la fiesta, una de las prostitutas está a punto de morir y RICHARD la mete en la ducha para reanimarla. Al volver a casa, le dice a LAURA que se ha caído en una piscina. Más tarde, le cuenta la verdad pero ella no le cree. La empresa de KAREN es sometida a una auditoría pero nadie puede descifrar los libros, así que ella le pide a ABBY que se quede. Después, el auditor le sugiere que la envíe a un curso de contabilidad. Aunque la había contratado sólo temporalmente, KAREN le pide a ABBY que se quede en la empresa.

The AVERYS plan a romantic trip, but they have to cancel it off when he gets the assignment of holding a party with prostitutes. LAURA is still sleeping with SCOOTER. At the party, one of the prostitutes passes out so RICHARD brings her home and puts her in the shower to wake her. He is all wet and tells LAURA that he fell into a pool. He later tells her the truth, but she doesn't believe him. KL Motors is being audited, but no one can decipher the books, so KAREN rehires ABBY. After the audit, the auditor suggests KAREN send ABBY to an accounting class. Although she had only hired her temporarily, KAREN asks her to stay on.

DIANA malinterpreta su amistad y se enfurece porque su madre está saliendo con otro hombre. Por despecho, empieza a salir con un motociclista llamado ROY que su madre no soporta. GINGER y KENNY discuten si deberían dejar llorar a la niña o cogerla en brazos. Cuando ROY y DIANA son arrestados por la policía, KAREN y su hija sostienen una seria disputa...

KAREN meets BILL MEDFORD, a widower whose spouse committed suicide. Bill tries to kiss KAREN, but she says she isn't ready. DIANA misunderstands their friendship and is enraged that her mother is dating. Out of spite, Diana goes to a party with Roy, a biker who Karen hates. GINGER and KENNY argue over whether they should let ERIN cry or pick her up. When DIANA and her boyfriend are arrested by the police, KAREN and her daughter have a big argument...

LILIMAE es embaucada por un individuo, JACKSON MOBLEY, que le promete convertirla en estrella y roba 200 dólares a KENNY. Tras aceptar casarse con él y conseguir una actuación en Las Vegas, VAL y GARY van tras ellos a LAS VEGAS y descubren aliviados que no se han casado. RICHARD está harto de hacer el papel de proxeneta para el bufete y libera su ira en la persona de LAURA. Ella a su vez se entera de que SCOOTER ha vuelto con su mujer. ABBY ha pide a GARY que actúe con OLIVIA en la "Noche de los Padres". KAREN sospecha de ABBY: "Ten cuidado - le dice a GARY. "Las manos de ABBY son más rápidas que sus ojos..." Cuando GARY, ABBY y los niños se suben al coche, ABBY afirma: "Mira, somos una familia de verdad."

LILIMAE meets JACKSON MOBLEY, who promises to make her a star. He steals $200 from KENNY, and then she accepts to marry him and get an act in Las Vegas. VAL and GARY rush to Las Vegas to stop the wedding and are relieved to find out they didn't get married. RICHARD is tired of being the company pimp and takes his anger out on LAURA, who knows that SCOOTER has come back to his wife. ABBY asks GARY to perform a skit with OLIVIA on "Father's Night". KAREN suspects of ABBY: "Be careful" - she warns GARY. "ABBY's hand is quicker than her eye..." As GARY, ABBY and the kids get into the car, ABBY says,"See, we're a real family!"

LAURA va con sus vecinas a inspeccionar una finca que tiene fama de estar habitada por tres hermanas que vivieron allí. Las mujeres deben quedarse a dormir allí cuando el coche de KAREN no arranca. Por la noche, los fantasmas intentan que VAL se convierta en su madre. LILIMAE logra sacar a su hija del trance e impide que salte del tejado...

LAURA and her female neighbors go to check in a big house infamous for being inhabited by three sisters who lived there. The women must spend the night when KAREN's car won't start. At night, the ghosts try to make VAL their mother. LILIMAE eventually gets her daughter out of the trance and stops her from jumping off the roof...

GARY y ABBY deciden invertir en una fábrica mejicana de coches que funcionan con metanol. Para ello, él hipoteca la casa sin consultárselo a VAL y viaja hasta Méjico con ABBY y RICHARD, que le previene contra ella. Durante su estancia allí, GARY y ABBY se besan por primera vez, pero luego él se enfada con ella cuando pretende dejar a PETE fuera del negocio. En KL, VAL sigue preocupada por GARY porque no le consultó sobre la hipoteca de la casa ni le dijo que ABBY iría con él...

GARY and ABBY decide to invest in a Mexican factory for cars that work with Methanol. Therefore, he mortgages the house without telling VAL about it and travels to Mexico with ABBY and RICHARD, who warns against her. While in Mexico, GARY and ABBY have their first kiss, but later he gets mad at her when she wants to cut PETE out of their deal. At KL, VAL still is concerned about GARY because he didn't ask her about mortgaging the house or tell her that ABBY was with him...

RICHARD y LAURA facilitan a KAREN su primera cita, con CHARLES LINDEN, pero no sale bien. KENNY se opone a que GINGER inicie una carrera musical en vez de quedarse en casa cuidando al bebé. Ella decide hacerlo igualmente, aunque sea a espaldas de su marido, cuando ANDY MOORE, otro productor, la anima a ello...

RICHARD and LAURA ease KAREN her first date, CHARLES LINDEN, but it doesn´t go well. KENNY is against GINGER´s new music career instead of staying home taking care of the baby. She decides to do it anyway, even at her husband´s back, after ANDY MOORE, another producer, encourages GINGER to pursue a singing career...

Una antigua compañera de KAREN, VICTORIA HILL, va a colaborar con las mujeres de KL en un pase de modas benéfico. Todas las mujeres participarán en el pase luciendo vestidos. KAREN rechaza una oferta de VICTORIA para trabajar en N.Y. GARY dice a ABBY que está harto de que utilice el sexo para manipularle. LAURA quiere dejar a RICHARD por SCOOTER, pero está embarazada.

A former college mate of KAREN´s, designer VICTORIA HILL, is collaborating with the KL women in a fund-raising fashion show. All the neighborhood women are the models. KAREN refuses an offer from VICTORIA to work at N.Y. GARY tells ABBY he's tired of her acting sexy to manipulate him. LAURA wants to leave RICHARD for SCOOTER, but she learns she is pregnant.

14/45: "CRICKET"

El hermano de KAREN, JOE COOPER, catedrático invitado en la USC, se va a vivir con los FAIRGATE. RUSTY, ex novio de VAL, deja en casa de esta a su hija CRICKET. La chica miente, roba e incluso hace daño accidentalmente a OLIVIA. VAL accede a llevarla a un refugio, pero al final se arrepiente y la lleva a casa. GARY localiza a RUSTY y VAL le hace cambiar de opinión: decide volver a buscar a CRICKET.

KAREN´s brother JOE COOPER, gets a job as a visiting professor at USC and moves in with them. VAL´s ex-boyfriend RUSTY, leaves her daughter CRICKET at her home, but upset at being abandoned, CRICKET lies, steals and accidentally hurts OLIVIA. VAL reluctantly takes CRICKET to a shelter but reconsiders and brings her back home. At the end GARY locates RUSTY, and VAL makes him change her mind...

LILIMAE pasa a ABBY un trabajo que ha escrito VAL sobre los EWING para saber si podría publicarse, lo cual enfurece a VAL. ABBY se lo muestra a JOE, que cree que puede publicarse y lo envía a un editor. GARY, ofendido, se va con ABBY a ultimar el negocio del Metanol. LAURA le cuenta a RICHARD que está en estado, pero va a abortar y divorciarse de él, porque ya no le ama. Acaba convenciéndola para que tenga el bebé y le dice que cambiará, y empieza a mimarla y a tratarla bien, lo cual sólo la irrita. RICHARD es muy sincero sobre su propósito y confía a KAREN que está emocionado ante la perspectiva de ser padre de nuevo. Cuando vuelve a casa, LAURA le ha abandonado.

LILIMAE passes on to ABBY a book written by VAL about the EWINGS, in order to know if it could be published, which infuriates VAL. An offended GARY goes with ABBY to close the Methanol deal. LAURA decides to get an abortion and divorce RICHARD, despite the apparent change. He eventually her to keep the baby and that he will change, and starts pampering her and being really nice, which only irritates her. RICHARD is very sincere about wanting to change and tells KAREN how excited he is about the baby. When he gets home, LAURA has left him.

16/47: "SILVER SHADOWS" ("SOMBRAS DE PLATA")

ABBY necesita 20.000 dólares para el negocio de Metanol. Además conoce a un ingeniero llamado LARRY, pero le ignora a favor de ANDREW DOUGLAS, un famoso director de cine mudo a quien ABBY recuerda a su difunta esposa TERRY CLARINGTON. Mientras, LARRY se interesa más por KAREN y ABBY se pone celosa. Esta utiliza al millonario y algo senil director, que a veces la llama TERRY y le dice que la incluirá en su testamento. Cuando el anciano fallece, deja su fortuna a TERRY y no a ABBY. Además, ABBY ha perdido también a LARRY, que sale con KAREN...

ABBY tells Gary they need $20,000 to keep their Methanol business going. Besides, she meets an engineer named Larry but casts him aside when she meets ANDREW DOUGLAS, a famous silent-movie director. LARRY, meanwhile, becomes more interested in KAREN, and ABBY is jealous. She uses ANDREW, who says she reminds him of his deceased wife, TERRY CLARINGTON. ANDREW is rich and somewhat senile, and at times thinks ABBY is TERRY and tells her he will put her in his will. However, when he dies, he has left the money to TERRY, so ABBY gets nothing. ABBY, GARY y VAL viajan a Sacramento para entrevistarse con el Senador RIKER. ABBY seduce a este para poder legalizar el Metanol, para asombro de VAL. ABBY le dice a esta que debería aprender de ella. LORRAINE, la novia de JOE, llega a la ciudad, pero llegan a la conclusión de que ambos quieren cosas diferentes y su relación ya no funciona. LARRY invita a KAREN a pasar juntos el fin de semana, pero ella no se considera preparada. Tras escuchar los consejos de JOE, KAREN decide ir al cementerio y habla con SID: se quita el anillo de boda y le dice que siempre le amará, aunque ahora llevará el anillo colgado del cuello, para simbolizar que se ha liberado de su fantasía de que sigue con ella y asumir la muerte de SID...

ABBY, GARY and VAL travel to Sacramento to interview Senator RIKER. To VAL´s dismay, ABBY seduces him so he can legalize the Methanol. VAL is mad at her but ABBY tells her she could learn from her. JOE's girlfriend LORRAINE comes to town, but they determine they want different things and it won't work. LARRY asks KAREN away for the weekend, but she's not ready. After listening to JOE´s advice, KAREN decides to go to the cemetery and talks to SID. She takes off her wedding ring and says she will love him forever, but will now wear her ring on a chain to symbolize letting go of her fantasy that he's not really gone, and assume SID´s death...

El libro de VAL encuentra editor, pero GARY no quiere que airee los secretos de su familia. VAL accede, si sólo ve a ABBY en el trabajo. Pero GARY se cita una noche con ABBY y VAL firma el contrato. El jefe de RICHARD le pide que organice otra fiesta con prostitutas. Sin saber que le están grabando, RICHARD le explica a una de ellas que su bufete le usa sólo como proxeneta. La cinta se emite en las noticias y su jefe realiza una declaración afirmando que esas fiestas eran idea de RICHARD y que él no estaba al corriente. A continuación le despide.

VAL´s book finds a publisher, but GARY doesn´t want it to spread his family´s secrets. VAL agrees if he only sees ABBY at work. But GARY has an appointment with ABBY one night and VAL signs up the contract. Richard's boss tells him to set up another client party with prostitutes. Unaware that she's taping him, Richard tells a prostitute that his company is only using him as a pimp. The tape is played on the news, and his boss releases a statement that hiring the prostitutes was all Richard's idea and they had no knowledge of it. He then fires Richard.

RICHARD pide a LAURA que vaya a verle con una excusa y, una vez allí, intenta convencerla para que vuelva. GINGER actúa en un club y los WARDS deben ir a SAN FRANCISCO. Cuando GARY intercede entre LAURA y su marido, RICHARD le amenaza con una pistola y retiene a LAURA como rehén. La policía rodea la casa y LAURA es liberada por RICHARD, que se apunta con su pistola a la cabeza, pero esta no está cargada. La policía lleva a RICHARD a un psiquiátrico para su observación...

RICHARD begs LAURA to call on him and, once she is there, he tries to persuade her back. Ginger's singing in a club, so the Wards go to San Francisco. When GARY intercedes, RICHARD points at him with a gun and holds LAURA as a hostage. Meanwhile, a SWAT team has surrounded the house. Richard eventually lets Laura go and puts the gun to his head, but it isn't loaded. The police bring Richard to a psychiatric hospital for observation.

VAL prepara una cena a GARY, pero este debe ir a una reunión de negocios. Preocupada, lleva a OLIVIA a pasar el día a la montaña y el dueño de una cafetería intenta ligar con ella, sin éxito. KAREN y LAURA visitan a RICHARD en el hospital, donde va recuperándose. GARY y ABBY duermen juntos por fin, ajenos a la mirada vigilante de LILIMAE, que ve el coche de él aparcado delante de la casa de ella, y comprueba que no vuelve a dormir a casa. Al día siguiente, VAL pide disculpas a GARY y le dice que será más tolerante con sus compromisos laborales. Se abrazan, y LILIMAE le lanza a GARY una mirada asesina...

VAL makes a special supper for GARY, but he must leave to attend a business meeting. Concerned, she takes OLIVIA to spend the day at the mountain and the café owner makes an advance on her, unsuccessfully. KAREN and LAURA visit RICHARD in the hospital where he is getting better. GARY and ABBY finally sleep together, and LILIMAE sees his car at ABBY's and waits up for him, but he doesn't come home. The next day, VAL apologizes to GARY and says she'll be more lenient with his business. They hug, and LILIMAE shoots GARY a look that could kill!

RICHARD se cree preparado para volver a casa, y le dice a LAURA que le gustaría asistir al parto. LAURA habla con el médico de este, que le aconseja que sólo vuelva con él si piensa quedarse, y no por lástima. GARY pone fin a su aventura porque se siente muy culpable, pero sigue vigilando desde su ventana a ABBY. VAL nota algo e interroga a ABBY:

“No digo que tengamos una aventura ni tampoco que no. Sólo digo que podría estar con él siempre que quisiera...” Después de oír esto, VAL la abofetea. Más tarde, GARY va a ver a ABBY y la besa...

RICHARD believes himself ready to go home, and tells Laura he'd like to be part of the baby's birth. LAURA goes to see his doctor who tells her only to go back to him if she's there to stay, but not if it's out of pity. Gary feels so guilty, he ends his affair with ABBY, but he keeps watching her from the window. VAL notices something and questions ABBY:

“I'm not saying we are having an affair, and I'm not saying we're not. I am just saying that I can have him anytime I want…" After hearing this, VAL slaps on her. Later, Gary sees Abby and kisses her...

22/53: "LIVING DANGEROUSLY" ("VIVIR PELIGROSAMENTE")

RICHARD intenta recuperar su empleo, y, cuando LAURA lo lleva a casa, encuentra una nota suicida en la basura y ella decide volver con él. El libro de VAL se llamará CAPRICORN CRUDE ("Crudo de Capricornio") y JOE será su editor. GARY, que ha vuelto a verse con ABBY, se niega a ir a la presentación porque está furioso de que lo haya escrito. LILIMAE chantajea a GARY para que asista, diciéndole que le ha visto salir de un hotel con ABBY. Pero ABBY se lo impide y KAREN va a buscarle, seguida por VAL.

Cuando KAREN llama insistentemente a la puerta, le dejan entrar, pero VAL llega tras ella y comprende lo que ocurre, y se marcha a casa a hacer las maletas. GARY la persigue pero no consigue entrar en la casa:

"VALENE, no lo entiendes" - arguye él cuando la ve salir. "Podemos hablar, tenemos que hablar. Cariño, escúchame, por favor...No, llevamos mucho tiempo juntos, escúchame. No es lo que parece. Mira, tenemos que sentarnos a hablar..." Dejando tras de si a un desesperado GARY, VAL coge el coche y abandona el hogar...y él se queda solo en mitad de la noche.

Richard tries to get his job back, and they call Laura to bring him home. While there, she sees a suicide note in the garbage and decides to move back in. Val's publisher changes the name of her book to "Capricorn Crude", and hires Joe to be the editor. Val asks Gary to go to her publishing party, but he says no because he's mad about the book. At lunch, Karen and Lilimae see Abby and Gary coming out of an apartment together. Lilimae tells Gary she saw this and will tell Val if he won't go with her to the party. Gary agrees to go to the party, but that night he's at the apartment with Abby, who won't let him leave. At the party, Val's very upset about Gary not showing up. Karen leaves and Val sees her and follows.

Karen goes to the apartment and bangs on the door until Gary and Abby finally let her in. The door is open and Val walks in and sees what's going on. She takes off for home where she packs. Gary has followed, but she won't let him in. As she gets back into her car, Gary tries to stop her, but she takes off. He runs down the road after her, yelling at her to come back:

"VALENE, you don't understand. We can talk, we have to talk. Honey, listen to me please. No, we've been together too long, now listen. It's not like that. Look, we got to talk, we have to sit down and talk..." Leaving behind a desperate GARY, VAL gets into her car and drives off away from home, letting GARY behind, in the middle of the night...
