KNOTS LANDING

Una calle tranquila de CALIFORNIA, situada en un barrio llamado KNOTS LANDING...Aquí, a 5 minutos de la playa, bajo un cielo sin nubes, donde siempre hace buen tiempo, se desarrollaban las intrigas sentimentales que tuvieron en vilo a 100 millones de americanos. En el episodio NUEVOS ESPONSALES, perteneciente a la 2ª etapa de DALLAS, GARY y VALENE EWING se trasladaban a CALIFORNIA después de casarse otra vez. Gracias a ELLIE y BOBBY, la pareja se instalarían en una urbanización, KNOTS LANDING.

En realidad, KL era un proyecto de DAVID JACOBS anterior a la serie de los EWING: se trataba simplemente de la historia de 4 parejas de clase media. Sin embargo, la Cadena propuso a JACOBS una serie más ambiciosa, en forma de saga. Una vez DALLAS alcanzó el éxito, pudo llevarse a cabo KL, convirtiendo a los recién casados en una de esas 4 parejas.

En 1993, después de 344 episodios y 14 años en antena, fue cancelada porque ya no resultaba rentable, aunque todavía gozaba de un considerable nivel de audiencia. Era la única supersoap superviviente de la década de los 80. En 1997 se rodó una miniserie de reunión, BACK TO THE CUL-DE-SAC, que demostró, una vez más, qué era todo aquello que distinguía a KL de sus rivales, incluida la serie-madre, defenestrada en 1991.El primer episodio se emitió el 27 de diciembre de 1979 por la misma CBS.

Con el creador de la serie original a cargo de los guiones y la producción, la nueva serie empezó su andadura televisiva, en torno a la vida cotidiana de los EWING de California y sus vecinos, KAREN y SID FAIRGATE, los conflictivos LAURA y RICHARD AVERY, y, por último, los jóvenes GINGER y KENNY WARD. Los actores principales, además de TED SHACKELFORD y JOAN VAN ARK, eran inicialmente DON MURRAY y MICHELE LEE. El primero se hizo famoso como el vaquero enamorado de MARILYN MONROE en BUS STOP. Durante 2 años, interpretó a SID, un vendedor de coches que, junto a su mujer KAREN (la polifacética MICHELE LEE), prestaba apoyo a sus nuevos vecinos.

En el bando de los ambiciosos, se encontraba ABBY CUNNINGHAM, una manipuladora joven encarnada por la espectacular rubia DONNA MILLS, posiblemente la actriz que más popularidad obtuvo a raíz del éxito de KL. Completaban el reparto CONSTANCE McCASHIN (LAURA), JOHN PLESHETTE (RICHARD), KIM LANKFORD (GINGER), JAMES HOUGHTON (KENNY) y, desde el 4º año, KEVIN DOBSON como MACK.JACOBS comentó en 1990, sobre los primeros años de la serie: “KL tuvo problemas al principio, aunque nunca fue un fracaso, tampoco era un éxito, simplemente se mantenía sin identidad propia, o ignorada por la prensa, o vista como la hermana pequeña...Aún así, hizo lo que había que hacer para continuar: fue una superviviente.”

La 3ª etapa empezó con la muerte de SID: “Yo siempre había visto KL como un montón de piezas entrelazadas - recordó luego MICHELE - , pero todas parte de un rompecabezas bien construido. Sin embargo, como actriz, disfruté del año siguiente, en que KAREN pasó por el proceso de reencontrarse a sí misma.”Una de las actrices secundarias, LISA HARTMAN (CIJI), tuvo que regresar en su momento a petición del público, tras la muerte de su personaje, interpretando curiosamente otro papel (CATHY). Asimismo, se publicó que CHARLENE TILTON iba a recuperar su personaje de LUCY en KL, aunque precisamente acababa de ser despedida de DALLAS porque su personaje estaba ya agotado.

En los comienzos, LORIMAR pidió a varias estrellas de DALLAS que hiciesen una pequeña aparición: así, BOBBY intervino en el primer episodio, J.R. en el 2º y LUCY en el 6º. “Cuando LARRY visitaba KL - confiesa JACOBS - , nos encontrábamos invariablemente con un episodio que NO funcionaba. J.R. era un “ellos” que ensombrecía fácilmente al “nosotros” de KL.” También GARY apareció de vez en cuando en la serie original, hasta que BOBBY fue “resucitado” y los “crossovers” se hicieron totalmente inviables para los guionistas de KL.Una de las características que diferenciaban a KL de las demás supersoaps era que su acción se desarrollaba, al principio, entre gentes de clase media.

“No buscábamos un gran espectáculo - explicó TS - Esta serie hablaba sobre la gente como nosotros, que vive los mismos dramas que pueden afectar nuestra vida: el divorcio, el alcoholismo, el adulterio...”. Uno de los productores, LAWRENCE KASHA, declaró sobre el tema: “Mantenemos la serie tan de clase media como podemos. Nuestra regla es que cualquier cosa que pueda ocurrir en la vida real, puede ocurrir en KL.” Siguiendo esta pauta, en los primeros episodios, una de las protagonistas sufría una violación, pero no se atrevía a confesarle lo ocurrido a su marido; otra descubría que estaba embarazada de un 4º hijo que no esperaba. Cada episodio se centraba en una historia concreta desde los inicios.

En el capítulo 14º, la llegada de ABBY supuso el empujón definitivo hacia el éxito.“La serie no se limitaba a una lucha entre buenos y malos - añadió a su vez DONNA MILLS - Ni siquiera ABBY hacía sufrir a los hombres por placer, sólo quería defender sus intereses con las únicas armas de que disponía.” Según MICHELE LEE, “nuestros personajes tenían historias y pasado, había un sentido de futuro. Eran tridimensionales, honestos y decentes.”

A quiet cul-de-sac in CALIFORNIA, located in a suburban area called KNOTS LANDING...Here, five minutes away from the beach, under a cloudless sky, where it is always fair weather, the sentimental intrigues that developed kept 100 millon Americans on the edge. In the episode RETURN ENGAGEMENT, part of DALLAS´ Season 2, GARY and VALENE EWING moved to CALIFORNIA after a second marriage. Thanks to Miss ELLIE and BOBBY, the couple would settle in a suburban area: KNOTS LANDING.

Actually, KL was a DAVID JACOBS project prior to the EWINGS´ series: it simply was about the story of four middle-class couples. However the Network proposed JACOBS a more ambitious show, "more saga-like". Once DALLAS hit success, he could develop KL, turning the just married into one of these couples.

In 1993, after 344 episodes and a 14-year running, it was cancelled because it was not profitable any more, though it always enjoyed a considerably high audience rating. This was the only surviving supersoap from the 80?s decade. In 1997 a Reunion Mini-series was shot, BACK TO THE CUL-DE-SAC, proving, once more, what was all that distinguished KL from its rivals, including the mother series, ended in 1991.

The first episode was aired on December 27, 1979 on CBS too. With the original series´ creator in charge of the scripts and production, the new show started off its TV running centered around the everyday life of EWINGS from California and their neighbors KAREN and SID FAIRGATE, turmoiled LAURA and RICHARD AVERY, and lastly, young GINGER and KENNY WARD. The main stars, besides TED SHACKELFORD and JOAN VAN ARK, originally were DON MURRAY and MICHELE LEE. He became famous playing the cowboy infatuated by MARILYN MONROE in BUS STOP. During 2 years, he played SID, a used cars´ salesman who, together with wife KAREN (multifaceted MICHELE LEE), gave support to their new neighbors.

On the greedy side was ABBY CUNNINGHAM, a manipulative woman impersonated by spectacular blond DONNA MILLS, possibly the actress who got most famous thanks to KL´s success. Completing the cast were CONSTANCE McCASHIN (LAURA), JOHN PLESHETTE (RICHARD), KIM LANKFORD (GINGER), JAMES HOUGHTON (KENNY) and, from the Year 4 on, KEVIN DOBSON as MACK. JACOBS remarked in 1990, about the show´s earliest years: “KL had problems at the beginning, though it never was a flop, it was not a hit either, it simply stood up without an identity of its own, or ignored by the press, or seen as the little sister...Even so, it did what had to be done to go on: it was a survivor.”

Season 3 premiered with SID´s death: “I had always seen KL as a lot of intertwined pieces - MICHELE reminisced later-, but all of them part of a well-built puzzle. However, I enjoyed the next year as an actress, since KAREN went through the process of re-discovering herself.” One of the supporting actresses, LISA HARTMAN (CIJI), had to come back at one time by the audiences´ request, after her character died, curiously playing another role (CATHY). Likewise, it was published that CHARLENE TILTON was going to get her LUCY character back on KL, though she had just been fired from DALLAS because they had run out of ideas for her.

At the beginning LORIMAR asked several DALLAS´s stars to make a small appearance on KL: so BOBBY introduced the show on episode 1, J.R. gueststarred on 2 and LUCY on 6. “When LARRY visited KL – confessed JACOBS - , we invariably met an episode NOT working. J.R. was like “them” easily shadowing the “us” of KL.” Also GARY came up once in awhile on the original series, until BOBBY was “resurrected” and the “crossovers” became impossible for the KL writers. One of the characteristical KL trademarks before other supersoaps was the story used to develop among middle-class people, at first.

“We weren´t going for a big show - explained TS – This show talked about people like us, living the same dramas that may affect our lives: divorce, alcoholism, adultery...”. One of the producers, LAWRENCE KASHA, stated about the subject: “We keep the show as middle-class as we can. Our rule is that anything that can happen in real life, then can happen on KL.” Following this pattern, throughout the earliest episodes, one of the main female characters was raped, but did not dare to tell it to her husband; another wife found out that was unexpectedly pregnant for the fourth time. Every episode revolved around a specific story from the day one.

On episode 14, ABBY´s arrival meant the final push to success.“The show was not limited to a good-bad fight - added DONNA MILLS – Not even ABBY made men suffer for pleasure, only wanted to defend her interests with her only weapons.” According to MICHELE LEE, “our characters had a history and a past, there was a sense of future. They were three-dimensional, honest and decent.”
