Born as SUZANNE CUPITO on December 5, 1951 in HOLLYWOOD, MORGAN BRITTANY´s beginnings were the most promising: as a child, she co-starred on movies like M. LeRoy´s GYPSY, M. Shavelson´s YOURS, MINE AND OURS or Hitchcock´s THE BIRDS. But when she was 14, her agent told her that couldn't do anything else for her. After a 7-year retirement on acting, at 21 started a new career as an actress and a model, and participated in a few shows. In 1976, she appeared personifying VIVIEN LEIGH in a sequence of S.J. Furie´s GABLE & LOMBARD and also in J. Schlesinger´s THE DAY OF THE LOCUST. About 4 years later, impersonated the GONE WITH THE WIND´s heroine on mini-series MOVIOLA (episode "The Scarlett O´Hara War").

Her eyes´ color was a decisive factor for the casting of MORGAN as KATHERINE, since she had to be believable as PRISCILLA POINTER's daughter on the show. After a regular stint on 7 episodes of Season 4, she signed up a contract to stay for 2 years. MORGAN was KATHERINE for the last time in 1987.

En 1976, apareció caracterizada como VIVIEN LEIGH en una secuencia de LOS ÍDOLOS TAMBIÉN AMAN (S.J. Furie) y también en COMO PLAGA DE LANGOSTA (J. Schlesinger). Unos 4 años después, volvía a encarnar a la heroína de LO QUE EL VIENTO SE LLEVÓ en la miniserie MOVIOLA (episodio "La guerra por Escarlata O´Hara").

El color de sus ojos fue un factor decisivo en la elección de MORGAN para el papel de KATHERINE, ya que debía resultar creíble como hija de PRISCILLA POINTER en la serie. Después de aparecer como actriz regular en 7 episodios de la 4ª temporada, firmó un contrato para seguir en su papel durante dos años más. MORGAN fue KATHERINE por última vez en 1987.

I am an avid fan of classic movies, and, prior to "Dallas", I had already watched you in movies such as "The Birds" and "Yours, Mine and Ours", although I didn't know that bright blue-eyed child credited as "Suzanne Cupito" was to be known later as "Morgan Brittany". Once you appeared on the Lorimar show, I discovered a fascinating movie you co-starred in: "Gypsy", playing the sister of the character Natalie Wood played as an adult, Baby June, whose rendition of "Let Me Entertain You" was so charming! What meant for you acting in one of the last (if not the last) musicals of Hollywood?

Working in the film "Gypsy" was one of my fondest memories. I was around 8 or 9 years old at the time and even though it was a long audition process just to get the part of "Baby June", I worked very hard and wanted to be the best I could be. I had the honor of working in one of the last of the big Hollywood musicals and I am so fortunate. Mervyn LeRoy was a wonderful director, Rosalind Russell was the ultimate professional and I thought Natalie Wood was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. She used to come and watch me rehearse my dance numbers and I remember her very well. I am so grateful that Warner Bros. was my home for awhile and I am so lucky to have been part of such a legendary film.

Soy un gran admirador del cine clásico, y, antes de "Dallas", ya había visto algunas películas tuyas como "Los pájaros" y "Tuyos, míos, nuestros", aunque no sabía que aquella niña de brillantes ojos azules acreditada como "Suzanne Cupito" era la misma que después sería conocida como "Morgan Brittany". Después de debutar en la serie de Lorimar, descubrí una película fascinante en la que interviniste: "Gypsy (estrenada en España como "La reina del vodevil"), donde interpretabas a la hermana del personaje que Natalie Wood encarnaba al convertirse en adulta, Baby June. Tu versión de "Let Me Entertain You" era encantadora. ¿Qué significó para ti participar en uno de los últimos (si no el último) musicales de Hollywood?

Mi trabajo en "Gypsy" es uno de mis recuerdos más entrañables. Tenía 8 ó 9 años entonces y, aunque sólo el proceso de selección para ese papel fue muy largo, trabajé al máximo para poder conseguir el mejor resultado. Tuve el honor de actuar en uno de los últimos musicales de Hollywood y me siento muy afortunada por ello. Mervyn LeRoy era un director maravilloso, Rosalind Russell la perfecta profesional, y yo creía que Natalie Wood era la mujer más hermosa que había visto. Solía venir a verme ensayar mis números de baile y la recuerdo muy bien. Estoy muy agradecida de que Warner Bros. fuera mi hogar durante un tiempo y tuve mucha suerte de haber participado en un film tan legendario.

I guess that one could say that you have had two different careers, one as a child / teenage actor and another as an adult. Was it hard to make the transition from one to the other, or you just had a break to complete your education at college?

It was extremely difficult to make the transition from child actor to adult actor. Back in the 50's and 60's hardly anyone did it. The last film I made as a child actor was "Yours, Mine and Ours" in 1968. After that, I became a gawky teenager and really did not fit in. I went back to high school and disappeared for awhile. Life was very difficult since I was basically the support for my family and I was no longer making money. At the age of 18, I went to Las Vegas and appeared in a big extravaganza show at the International Hotel (now the Hilton), with Gene Kelly. I danced with him and we did two shows a night-7 nights a week. After that, I took what money I had made and started a new career in New York City. That is when I changed my name to Morgan Brittany. I felt that I needed to throw out my past completely and start over. So, I moved to New York as a new person and started a new life.

Podría decirse que has tenido dos carreras diferentes, una como actriz infantil y adolescente, y otra como actriz adulta. ¿Te resultó difícil hacer la transición de una a otra, o sólo dejaste de actuar para poder completar tu educación universitaria?

Me costó muchísimo hacer la transición de actriz infantil a adulta. En los años 50 y 60 casi nadie lo conseguía. La última película que hice como niña fue "Tuyos, míos, nuestros" en 1968. Después, me convertí en una adolescente desgarbada y no encajaba en la profesión. Regresé al instituto y desaparecí durante una temporada. La vida se complicó mucho porque yo era prácticamente quien mantenía a mi familia y ya no ganaba dinero. A los 18, me contrataron en Las Vegas para bailar con Gene Kelly en un espectáculo extravagante que se representaba en el International Hotel (hoy el Hilton). Bailé con él e hicimos dos funciones por noche, 7 noches a la semana. Después de aquello, cogí el dinero que había ganado y comencé una nueva carrera en Nueva York. Entonces fue cuando me cambié el nombre por el de Morgan Brittany. Pensaba que necesitaba deshacerme por completo de mi pasado y volver a empezar. Así que me mudé a Nueva York como una mujer nueva y comencé una nueva vida.

The Internet Data Base (imdb) features 81 titles in your filmography, which is stunning in an actress of your generation. This career must have given you the chance to meet really big stars of the old days of Hollywood (you have co-starred with actors like Henry Fonda, Lucille Ball, Rosalind Russell, Natalie Wood (though not onscreen), Rod Taylor, Tippi Hedren, Jessica Tandy, Anne Baxter, Raymond Burr or Angela Lansbury, just to mention a few. Do you keep a special memory of any of them? And what movie star has inspired you in your career?

I have been inspired by so many of those actors. Lucy taught me to know every job on set, Rosalind Russell taught me discipline, but Henry Fonda taught me to never give up. He gave me words to follow whenever I was feeling discouraged and they have helped me through many hard times as an actress. No one can ever know how difficult it is to constantly take rejection day after day as an actor or performer. That is why so many entertainers have insecurity and addiction problems.

Me han inspirado muchos de ellos. Lucy (Ball) me enseñó todo lo que hay que saber en el plató, Rosalind Russell me enseñó a tener disciplina, y Henry Fonda a no darme nunca por vencida. Me daba consejos cuando me sentía desanimada...Ellos me ayudaron a superar mis malos tiempos como actriz. Nadie puede llegar a saber lo difícil que es que te rechacen constantemente como intérprete. Por eso muchos artistas padecen problemas de inseguridad y adicción.

Now we must speak of "Dallas", otherwise some of my friends will kill me! I know that your brief appearance at the end of "The Scarlett O'Hara" telemovie as Vivien Leigh, was pivotal to get the part of Katherine Wentworth in "Dallas". I have always defended the idea that Katherine was a distant relative of Scarlett, because of her obsession with one man they could't get at all. I can also see some things of Snow White's Evil Queen and, inevitably, of Joan Collins' Alexis from "Dynasty". Am I looking too further, or they all were part of your deliciously wicked, two-faced, nutty Katherine?

You are very astute! How clever that you figured it out! I based my look on Disney's evil queen. (The heavy eye makeup, etc.) I also based the character not so much on Scarlett O'Hara, but on Eve Harrington from "All About Eve". I tried to play sweet and evil at the same time, until people started figuring Katherine out. Scarlett was used more for the attitude and obsession for Bobby. Katherine was actually already established on "Dallas" before Dynasty added Alexis. I think they might have copied us!

Ahora tenemos que hablar de "Dallas", o mis amigos me matarán...Tengo entendido que tu breve aparición al final del telefilme "La guerra por Escarlata O'Hara" encarnando a Vivien Leigh, fue decisiva para obtener el papel de Katherine Wentworth en "Dallas". Siempre he defendido que Katherine era una pariente lejana de Escarlata por su obsesión con un hombre que nunca podría conseguir. También puedo ver cosas de la Reina Malvada de Blancanieves y, cómo no, de la Alexis de Joan Collins en "Dinastía". ¿Voy demasiado lejos, o todas formaban parte de tu deliciosa, malvada, hipócrita y demente Katherine?

¡Eres muy astuto! ¡Qué inteligente que lo hayas mencionado...! Basé mi aspecto en la Reina Malvada de Disney (el maquillaje recargado, etc.). También basé el personaje, no tanto en Escalata O´Hara, sino en la Eva Harrington de "Eva al desnudo". Intenté interpretarla como dulce y malvada al mismo tiempo hasta que la gente empezara a descubrir las intenciones de Katherine. Utilicé a Escarlata más en su actitud y obsesión por Bobby. En realidad, Katherine ya era un personaje definido en "Dallas" antes de que "Dinastía" introdujera a Alexis. ¡Yo pienso que quizá fueron ellos quienes nos copiaron a nosotros!

I understand that you left "Dallas" because you got a part in a new show called "Glitter", produced by late Aaron Spelling. We could see this show here in Spain and it was underrated, maybe due to an overglamorous look. The series was a sort of "Hotel" set up in the newspaper business and only 14 episodes were filmed, which was too strange for someone like Spelling. The idea was very good to me, and you were surrounded by other excellent actors, like David Birney or Arthur Hill, and sorely missed Timothy Patrick Murphy, who played Ray´s cousin in "Dallas". Was it due to the "Dynasty" boom at that time (1984) or because of other reasons?

I was actually filming both "Dallas" and "Glitter" at the same time. The two productions made a deal that I could appear on both. It was unprecedented at the time. No actor had ever been contracted to two tv shows on two different networks at the same time. Unfortunately, "Glitter" was scheduled in a time slot on Thursday night that put it up against "The Cosby Show" and "Magnum P.I.", both of which were ratings giants. We just got crushed by the competition. There were many good shows that season that got quickly canceled. It was called "ABC's bloodbath"! So I went back to "Dallas", ended up killing Bobby and having my first child.

Pudimos ver esta serie en España y me pareció que fue infravalorada, tal vez debido a su imagen demasiado glamurosa. La serie era una especie de "Hotel" ambientado en una revista y se canceló después de sólo 14 episodios, algo muy raro en alguien como Spelling. La idea me pareció muy buena, y compartiste cabecera con otros excelentes actores, como David Birney o Arthur Hill, y el añorado Timothy Patrick Murphy, que interpretó al primo de Ray en "Dallas". ¿La cancelación se debió al "boom" de "Dinastía" en la época (1984) o a otros motivos?

En realidad yo rodaba ambas series, "Dallas" y "Glitter", al mismo tiempo. Los dos productores llegaron a un acuerdo según el cual podía aparecer en ambas, algo sin precedentes en aquella época: ningún actor había sido contratado para dos teleseries de diferentes cadenas al mismo tiempo. Por desgracia, "Glitter" fue programada en un horario, el jueves por la noche, que la situaba frente a "La hora de Bill Cosby" y "Magnum", que tenían una audiencia enorme. Nos aplastó la competencia, nada más...Aquella temporada a muchas buenas series les pasó lo mismo. Lo llamaron "El baño de sangre de la ABC"...Así que volví a "Dallas", terminé matando a Bobby y di a luz a mi primer hijo.

Spelling was clever enough to call Morgan again after "Glitter":

she was a very special guest star in the Season 3 cliffhanger of "Melrose Place".

Once again, she played a woman who might be described as

obsessive, bitchy and possessive with her estranged husband.

Another inevitable question: I don't know if you are watching the new "Dallas" aired by TNT. I would love to know what your opinion about it is, what you think of your former colleagues reprising their roles (Larry, Linda, Ken, Patrick especially) and, of course, has anyone from the show approached to you about a possible return of our dear miss Wentworth? Would you like to reprise the role?

I HAVE been watching the show and I love it! I am so excited to see the old characters back and very happy that they are staying true to David Jacobs original intent. I have not been asked back although so many of my fans would really love to see the return of Katherine Wentworth. There was never an end to her story, so we know that she is out there somewhere, maybe with Pam? I think it would be amazing if she were the mother of one of these new kids on the show. After all, Rebecca was her mother's name...who knows? Ofcourse, she could also have had a child with J.R. They had an affair and then not long after, Katherine went missing for awhile. Who knows? Anything can happen on this show!

Otra pregunta ineludible: No sé si estás siguiendo la nueva "Dallas" en TNT. Quisiera conocer tu opinión sobre la serie, lo que opinas de tus antiguos compañeros retomando sus papeles (Larry, Linda, Ken y Patrick especialmente) y, por supuesto, si alguien de la serie ha contactado contigo en relación con un posible retorno de nuestra querida Katherine Wentworth. ¿Te gustaría volver a interpretarla?

SÍ que estoy viendo la serie y me encanta...Estoy muy emocionada por el regreso de los antiguos personajes y muy contenta de que se hayan mantenido fieles al enfoque original de David Jacobs. No me han pedido que vuelva aunque a muchos de mis fans les encantaría asistir al retorno de Katherine Wentworth. Nunca se puso fin a su historia, así que sabemos que está por ahí en algún lugar, ¿tal vez con Pam? Sería sorprendente que fuera la madre de uno de esos chicos nuevos de la serie. Después de todo, Rebecca era el nombre de su madre...¿quién sabe? También pudo haber tenido un hijo de J.R. ya que fueron amantes y, poco después, Katherine desapareció durante un tiempo. ¿Quién sabe? Puede pasar cualquier cosa en esta serie...

One more question: If you had to choose one favorite scene of Katherine on Dallas, which one would you choose, as an actress?

I loved the scene with Pam in my bedroom when she confronts me about Bobby and then slaps me. We had such fun!

Since her last appearance on "Dallas", she has done onstage musicals and TV, mainly. She played outstanding roles on GLITTER, MELROSE PLACE and the mini-series LBJ: THE EARLY YEARS, and single episodes of THE NANNY, SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH and MARRIED...WITH CHILDREN. Her last movie to date is AMERICANIZING SHELLEY, along with guest appearances on the series DOC and a documentary for the dvd release of THE TWILIGHT ZONE.

Currently Morgan Brittany enjoys a family life with her husband stunt pro Jack Gill and their son Cody and daughter Katie.
