Kohno K (2024) Exploring the possible interspecific relationship between Spilosoma lubricipeda and S. punctaria (Lepidoptera, Arctiidae, Arctiiinae), based on daily light trap catches of adults in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture, northern Honshu, Japan. TINEA 27 (2): 136–142, February 2024.
Abstract An interspecific relationship between Spilosoma lubricipeda (Linnaeus, 1758) and S. punctaria (Stoll, 1782) (Lepidoptera, Arctiidae, Arctiinae), being yellow and red in dorsal abdominal coloration, respectively, was discussed based on the results of crossbreeding tests between individuals with various coloration in dorsal abdomen collected in Morioka, northern Honshu, Japan. The results showed that offspring with perfect yellow abdomen emerged when both parents had a perfect yellow abdomen. However, when at least one parent exhibited a coloration other than perfect yellow, the offspring displayed a range of colorations from perfect yellow to red. These results strongly imply that the population examined in this study consists of a single species with somewhat continuous variation in the coloration in dorsal abdomen ranging from yellow to red. At present, therefore, two hypotheses are possible, one is that S. lubricipeda and S. punctaria are identical species with a variation in coloration of dorsal abdomen ranging from perfect yellow to red, and another is that S. lubricipeda exhibits various coloration in dorsal abdomen ranging from perfect yellow to red of which the red individuals are hardly distinguished from S. punctaria only by the coloration in their dorsal abdomen. This shall be elucidated by further investigation on the morphology in genitalia especially of the individuals with red dorsal abdomen.

TINEA 27 (2): 130–135, February 2024.
Abstract Interspecific relationships between Spilosoma lubricipeda (Linnaeus, 1758) and S. punctaria (Stoll, 1782) (Lepidoptera, Arctiidae, Arctiinae) are discussed, based on daily light trap surveys in crop and grassland fields in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture, northern Honshu, Japan for five years. The results suggest that the populations of those two species in the survey area indeed represent at least two distinct species differing in the characteristics of abdominal coloration and sex ratio in each generation, while the conventional discrimination of S. lubricipeda and S. punctaria by the coloration of their dorsal abdomen alone turns out to be unsatisfactory. The interspecific relationships between those two species of Spilosoma may need further investigation, especially on the genital morphology of the individuals with the dorsally-red abdomen.
