One claim that’s constantly made about porn is that it degrades women. I can think of any number of other things that degrade women more. Domestic violence is more degrading than pornography; and it affects many more women.
I never had any use for pornography. I like tasteful nudes, such as in Renaissance paintings. These paintings don’t degrade women; they celebrate women. I do the same in my poetry.
With porn, we see a number of positives. One is that it allows women who have few other options a way to survive. Another is that it sexually gratifies men who cannot get sex. The first provides opportunity; the second does a lot to prevent rape and incest.
So that while we have Andrea Dworkin claiming that porn leads to rape, reality does not reflect that. In Afghanistan, Bosnia and Congo during the wars, there was no porn; but there were many brutal rapes in all three countries. Women in these countries are degraded far more than any sex worker in Hollywood. It appears that there was needed an invasion of Islamists into America to drive that point home.
Once again, I myself never had any use for pornography. But there are many people who do, and it is their business and none of ours. As for portrayal of nude women, it can be either degrading or glorifying depending on how it is done. I like art that celebrates women. And I advise that stance to other men.
