A being that exists as himself and as part of his species will have an interest toward both, with different people having different mixes and at different parts of their lives.
So some people see selfishness as the worst thing of which a man can be guilty, and others see greater interest as a trick. In fact both are inextricable from human makeup. I have both. You have both.
Which means that people will have orientation both toward themselves and other people. They will also have orientation to life and orientation to the universe. Of these there will always be different mixes. Some people care what happens to polar bears and others do not. However nobody wants to see life end as such. Most people don’t care what happens to Tau Ceti. However nobody wants to see the universe destroyed.
So different people will have orientation toward different things, and at different times in their lives. We see this with baby boomers. They started out caring for other people and the universe; then in 1980s and 1990s they cared mostly about the size of their house and the brand of their car. Now as they are getting older they are realizing their infirmity and again care about the rest of the world. We see the same people having different mixes of self-orientation and other-orientation at different times in their lives. Which means, once again, that both are inextricable from human makeup.
I do not expect either self-interest or other-interest to go away. I expect to figure out workable ways to deal with both. Neither exists from the standpoint of moral judgment, and neither is good or bad. They exist as part of reality and are value-neutral.
It is important to work with both to achieve benefit both for humanity and for its individual members.
