Girls
Girls will have a hat tournament, similar to the one you already attended, on Oct 24.
With Fall Break coming up this weekend, we reached out to some of you regarding the upcoming Girls 3v3 Tournaments. We have decided to combine the tournaments on October 17th and 31st to October 24th. Updated information is below. Please reach out to your girls players and make sure they have the latest information.
Please come join us on October 24th for our final Girls 3v3 Tournament!
When: October 24 8:30-Noon
Where: Galena Hills Park - West Fields, 12500 S 550 W, Draper, UT 84020
What: Fall Girls 3v3 Tournament! Bring a team or we will have one for you to join!
Cost: $15 for those with a USAU Membership. $30 for those without a membership, due at sign in. You can prepay via Venmo (@utahultimate) or Paypal (pay@utahultimate.org). Please include a note with the tournament date and the player name.
COVID: Fields will be distanced as much as possible. Players and spectators will be asked to socially distance as much as possible, including during sign in. Players will be asked to wear face coverings during sign in, and whenever possible throughout the tournaments. Some games will require a face covering by all players when on the field.
Players and spectators will be required to wear masks whenever they are not able to maintain a 6ft distance between family groups, as required by Utah Department of Health. Players may remove face coverings during active play if allowed by players on both teams.
Practices
We will continue to focus on 3v3 competition at practice. You probably saw the note I sent out that 3v3 scrimmages are one of the most effective uses of our precious practice time.
Please wear masks at practice if at all possible, and stay home if you feel ill or have a cough or headache.
I will try to remember to bring swag to practice for those who have put in throws for summer and/or fall.
Winter: Looking ahead a few weeks, fall season will be over. Normally we play twice / week during the winter, in the cold & snow. This year, with social distancing, etc, we will only practice once per week. Probably on Satrday. Watch for more info soon.
I think we would benefit from more 3v3 at our practices rather than a full-field game. What happens in a 7v7 scrimmage is the players with the most experience end up getting more touches - more throws, more catches, etc. The less experienced players - arguably the players who need it most - get fewer touches, fewer throws, etc. Those players tend to be less involved in the play and just kind of hang in the background, since there are 6 other players to run the show. You can't do that with 3v3. 3v3 requires all 3 players on the team to be involved. I'm not saying don't do 7v7. I'm just saying more 3v3 and less 7v7 is better practice - the players and the team will get better faster. Like 75% 3v3, 25% 7v7, and 3v3 at every practice. Not every practice needs to have a 7v7 game.
That means several small-field scrimmage games going on at once at practice. And the games should be divided up roughly by skill level - because you're going to get the most out of playing with/against players that are at the same level or slightly better than you.
Even during a normal season more 3v3 than 7v7 scrimmaging is better. I've spoken with Dave Kroupa, the Lone Peak coach, about this in previous seasons, and his #1 key to practice is this. Lots of 3v3 scrimmage. This season, where games are 5v5 on a smaller field, it makes even more sense. I encourage you to go with the 3v3 games at every practice - even skip 7v7 at some of the practices starting today.
Let's make use of the bowl (east fields at PVP) for practice. The old lady that complains all the time doesn't get to determine whether we play on the upper field or not, but if the lower field is available, there's no reason we shouldn't use it. We don't need to provoke confrontation. Switching it up also gives the lawn a chance to recover from all of our cleats tearing it up all the time. See you at 5 today! Also a reminder to wear masks at practice are encouraged. Please bring one and wear it if at all possible. We don't need more players out for quarantine or worse - contracting covid - stay safe.
