Middle School State Tournament Recap
Big Hi-5s to all of the middle school players who came to the state tournament this weekend. You all worked really hard and played some exciting games. 3 of the 5 games we played were decided by 1 or 2 points.
I want to thank Coach Gary who did a great job coaching this year. He is building a great middle school program here! Thanks to parents who supported our middle school players at the state tournament and through the season. You are awesome!
Parents and players: I want to encourage ALL of our middle school players to continue playing ultimate! One of our toughest challenges has been players who will come out for a few months, maybe even a full season, and then quit. The problem is, they quit just as they start to get good at the game and become competitive. At the state tournament Friday, I asked how many of our players had played with the team a year ago. Only 3 of our 10 players played at the state tournament last year. Our disadvantage has been that we have a very young team playing against teams full of older players. Other teams will all lose all a lot of players who are 8th graders this year because middle school ultimate ends after 8th grade. We have only 1 player moving on to 9th grade next year (shout out to Katrina, great job this year!). You will all be back again with another year of experience under your belt. So keep playing!
CHHS players will continue to play ultimate through the summer a couple of times per week. Keep an eye out over the next couple of weeks for days & times they will be playing. I encourage you to continue to play with them. Keep coming to play and keep getting better!
Utah High School Boys 2017 North Region Tournament
Looking forward to what promises to be an exciting boys region tournament next weekend! The weather forecast is perfect: sunny with 70 for a high.
Games start Friday@3pm at Weber County Fairgrounds in Ogden. Meet @CHHS @1pm to carpool Friday. Meet @Park Village Park @7am to carpool Saturday (games start at 9 Saturday morning).
Good spirit is essential! Remember that spirit of the game is the 1st rule of ultimate. Treat others as you want to be treated. Intensity with integrity! Have a good attitude: don't be afraid to make calls, but don't argue either. Simply contest if you disagree.
Normal practices this week Tu, We, Th 5-7pm at Park Village Park. BE THERE! Jackson Booth and the other coaches and captains will be running practice this week. I will not be at practices, but I will be at the tournament Friday & Saturday. *Thursday's practice will be followed by a team dinner - see below.
A few words from the coach. Screenshot these and make it your background this week! ;-)
If you drop a catch or throw a pass into the turf or get D'd, don't stress. Everyone does. Don't spend any time hanging your head or worrying about the mistake. Shake it off and get back on D immediately. Take time to think about what you could do better after we score the point.
Go 100%! Don't walk, don't jog, sprint up the field every time we pull the disc. EXPLODE from your cuts. MOVE. If you are not moving, 90% chance you are not open. THROW & GO - don't wait and watch the disc after you release: Just go! BID - even if you don't think you'll get it. Practice this week with the intensity you will bring to the tournament this weekend.
Don't look off the open player - take what the defense gives you, even if it's only 5 yards or even backwards. Keep the disc moving, especially against a zone. Patient disc movement back and forth is what breaks a zone. (The only time it might be ok to look off an open player is a pass to the force side for less than 5 yards early in the stall count). Passing the disc quickly in this way shows trust in your teammates and trust is critical.
Tenacious D! Be active & on your toes. Establish a hard force and move your feet to prevent dumps & swings. Bend your knees and get your hands low.
Team Dinner Thursday at 6:30 after practice at Park Village Park. Bring your favorite pasta or carb dish or a salad or dessert to share. Thanks to Thane & Tate's Mom for organizing the dinner! Watch for details from her or Tate this week.
Tournament Schedule here: http://play.usaultimate.org/events/Utah-High-School-North-Regionals-2017/schedule/Boys/High-School-Boys/
Both A&B teams have 4 games Friday and 1-4 games Saturday, depending on wins & losses. Each team has 3 pool games Friday at 3, 4:30, and 6. The first bracket games will be at 7:30 Friday. Saturday games are all bracket games: 9, 10:45, 12:30, and 2:15.
Both teams are in a bracket with a big matchup against Break Force for the last pool play game at 6pm Friday (CHA vs BFA and CHB vs BFB). CHA will play Sky View B first followed by Jordan B. CHB will play Riverton first followed by Krakens A.
Note that Bingham is not in the schedule, which leads me to believe that the Bingham teams have been moved to the south region. This probably also means that there will be only 4 bids from the north and 4 bids from the south for the state tournament.
No players have told me they can not make it to this tournament. So I have roster counts of 11 players for the CH A team and 16 for the CH B team.
Watch for a tournament packet within the next 24 hours.
