Please don't waste your summer! Summer is the season where you can really separate yourselves from other teams. The Krakens Boys A Team is the perfect example of this. They have gone from a team literally at the bottom 4 years ago to a team that snuck into the state tournament last year to a contender that finished 2nd place at region and 4th place at state this year. Here's the scary part: they graduate only 1 senior this year. How did they do it? They were consistent at practice and they played through the summer. I played club ultimate with several of their players. If you want to see a similar outcome next year, if you want to be able to beat Jordan and Break Force and Gorillaz next year, we need to see 10+ boys and 7+ girls (not counting graduates) at practice through the summer. Let's make it happen!
CH Summer Ultimate
We voted for summer practice times in our groupme chat. Taking into account not only the most popular choices, but also the fact that some players cannot play in the evening while others cannot play in the morning, we have chosen the following days & times. For the most part we will play pickup games, but we will sprinkle some instruction in and learn some goaltimate as well.
Tuesday mornings, 8:30am. (8 & 8:30 had the same # of votes, so I cast the tiebreaker - personally I prefer 8am, but I think some of you will struggle to get up for an 8am practice, so we'll start at 8:30). Starting in June.
Wednesday evenings, 7pm. Starting May 24.
Saturday morning conditioning, 8:30am. Starting May 27.
The team calendar has been updated with these dates. Check it out at http://ultimatechills.club. You can subscribe to the calendar so that all of our events will be included on your phone calendar. Contact me if you need help doing that.
Invite your friends to play during the summer! New players really strengthen the program and help to make everyone better.
Copper Hills Summer clinic. August. Park Village Park. Exact dates TBA, but plan on a week of ultimate and instruction. Come get awesome!
Summer 5000. In order to encourage you to become a better player, each season we hold a throwing challenge. Throw 5000 throws before our team clinic in the fall and you can choose some sweet swag - including discs, jerseys, powerade, cones and other items. More importantly, your skill level will rise significantly. Congrats to Danica, Lydia, Lake, Ashlie, and Meagan who completed the Spring 3000 (I have not forgot you - you will be recognized). Players who have fulfilled the challenge in the past have experienced big jumps in their playing ability. AJ, Conner, Wilkey, B, Lake, Kate, Kayleen, Ciera and Tricia have completed the challenge in past seasons and have really improved their game. The challenge is optional, but do not consider it optional if you are serious about performing well at state next year. Top teams don't get to the top by chance - they have practiced hard. Here are a few points to remember. Record your throws on a daily basis. Guessing or estimating your total is not acceptable. Your throws need to be recorded in this spreadsheet. You’re welcome to write or record your throws somewhere else, but before you can claim a reward, you need to put your total into that spreadsheet.
End of season party. I have heard rumors of an end of season party being planned by some of the players. I hope that comes to pass because I would like to make some recognitions. Keep an eye on groupme for updates.
Other Summer Ultimate Opportunities
SL County Summer league, Murray. Highly recommended if you are 16+. Play 2 games every Thursday night for 7 weeks starting June 22 alongside experienced adult players. Has not been officially announced yet, but registrations are available. https://www.activityreg.com/selectactivity_t2.wcs I will probably sign up to be a captain. Come be on my team!
CH Pickup is not the only pickup available. There are enough pickup games in the Salt Lake Valley that you could play every day, many times twice a day. Here are some of the active pickup games I am aware of. For more info on any of these, let me know. Pls post to the groupme when you go, in case any other players would like to ride with you. Please go play, and I'll see you there!
Riverside Park Lunchtime Pickup Mo-Th 12-1:15. 700 N 1400 W, SLC. This is my favorite, and may be the best pickup for high school players. You will no doubt see Krakens players at this game and at Sugarhouse during the summer. Riverside has some experienced players, so it is fairly organized and competitive, but beginners are always encouraged. I will be playing Riverside at least once / week, and I'd love to see you there too!
Sugarhouse Park Lunchtime Pickup Fr 12:30-2, Sa 11-3. 1500 E 2100 S, SLC. Long pickup tradition. This is also the highest level pickup, but not too high for anyone that has played a season of high school ultimate. https://www.facebook.com/groups/188171904571175/
Germania Park Lunchtime Pickup Mo,Th 11:45-1. 5243 S 1000 W, Murray. You will not see a force or any ho or v-stacks at this pickup, but there are some very skilled players (club level) who play here, and it's well worth your time. http://uplayn.com/signup.php
Southwood Park Evening Pickup Tu 6:30-9:30pm. 725 E 6200 S, Murray. This same group also plays Saturday mornings 9-12 at Cottonwood Softball Complex, 4400 S 1300 E, Holladay. https://www.facebook.com/groups/586868331335691/ (Ultimately Fun Frisbee)
Taylorsville Pickup Tu 6:30-9pm. Taylorsville Regional Park, 2700 W 5100 S, Taylorsville. High level, a number of club players. This pickup runs through the summer only - has not started yet, so keep an eye on the fb group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1210365965675348/
Cottonwood Heights Lunchtime Pickup https://www.facebook.com/groups/120385738396186
There are also pickup games in South Jordan (lunchtime), Sunnyside Park (high level, Thursday evenings), and Liberty Park (Monday nights 9-12)
Check the UUDA page for even more pickup opportunities: https://utahultimate.org/pick-up/
Krakens summer clinic. June 5-8, all day. This is an excellent ultimate clinic run by one of the best HS coaches in the state. Receive instruction from some of the best players in the community! camp.krakensultimate.com
Swarm Youth Club Championship Team Tryouts, June 3 & 7. This is the highest level youth ultimate available, and an opportunity to represent Utah at a national tournament. Going to tryouts does not commit you to being on the team. Go to tryouts just for the tryouts experience, even if you don't want to or can't play for the team. See details here: https://utahultimate.org/youth/utah-swarm-youth-club-championships-team/
Utah Summer Games. June 16-17, Cedar City. Very fun tournament! This is a chance to get a feel for what ultimate is like at the highest level: club ultimate, but without committing to a full season with a team or committing to the intensity of actual club competition. You sign up as a team and compete as a team. Let me know if you are interested - I can probably find you a team. https://larryhmillerutahsummergames.org/ultimate-frisbee/
Club Ultimate. Participate in ultimate at its highest level for a full summer season. Although teams only practice once or twice per week, this takes a high level of commitment. You will have opportunity to participate in tournaments both in and out of state. I have participated with a few different teams. Send me a message if you are interested and I can probably get you on a team. You will learn a LOT and become a better player and gain some great experience.
Lost & found. I have a lot of lost & found items from this season. I will post pictures. Items not claimed will be donated.
Discs for sale! I still have grizzly discs for sale for $10 and misprints for sale for $8. About $3 from each disc goes directly to the team budget.
