State Tournament
Congratulations to our girls team who competed at the state tournament this past weekend! The weather was beautiful, with only a slight breeze and temps in the 60s throughout the tournament. Our girls played some of the best ultimate they have played all season this weekend. Their disc movement was excellent as they were able to slice through a few zones and frustrate even the mighty Lone Peak A team who kept switching defenses to try to stop our girls from moving the disc upfield. Despite great play, and despite being in the game the whole way during each of our Friday games, we came up short in every game and ended up 0-3 after Friday's competition. Saturday we started out against a Lone Peak A team that boasted an undefeated season (and after Saturday's games, a state championship). It was our best game ever against Lone Peak A, but we still came up short. It would have been easy to give up after losing 4 games in a row, but our girls continued to fight. We finally turned things around and really started to take care of business by beating both Bingham and then Lone Peak B soundly to take 5th place.
Also, our girls finished 3rd in spirit scores, only hundredths of a point behind 2nd place Sky View. Copper Hills has a tradition of showing good spirit and you lived up to our rep. Well done!
Big high-5 girls! For full details of the tournament, check here:
Region Tournament
Congrats to Boys B Team, who finished with a win. That's improvement over our B Team 2 years ago who lost all of their games ;-).
Boys A Team finished 5th place with wins over Sky View B, Jordan B, Riverton, Viewmont, and Davis. We lost twice to Break Force and once to Jordan in some close games. All in all we played fairly well.
It would be easy to be disappointed with our season because our boys A Team was so close to qualifying for state. It wasn't that we were a few games from getting in to the state tournament; we were literally a few points away from qualifying for state. But look at it this way: A Team tied for our best finish ever. Boys B and Girls had their best finish ever. Couple that with the fact that other teams are getting better and competition is the best that it's ever been. Copper Hills teams are all better than any team we have had in the past. Big hi-5's all around.

What we learned:
Returning players, please take these things to heart. Remember them to improve for next season:
Zone-breaker works: we turned the disc over fewer times when we worked the disc patiently up the field with short, high-percentage throws, only throwing long throws when they are uncontested. This was proven out in both the boys games and the girls games.
Every game, every point matters: Had Boys A team won 1 or 2 of our close losses to LPA, Break Force, Orem, West, SVA, Jordan, or LPB, the north would have had 5 bids to state and we would have qualified. All of those losses were 4 points or less, most of them 1 or 2 points. We were literally a few points away from qualifying for state.
Practices matter: Had we not practiced in the winter, we would not have been competitive. Our players who have attended the most total practices are our best players on the field in competition. Want to play better? Want a better team? Want to qualify for state? Want your team to place better at tournaments? The answer is one word: Practice!
Even individual players missing from single games matter. An individual player can make the difference between a win and a loss. Girls lost to Lone Peak B on Friday, but beat LPB Saturday 14-7. The difference? There is not 1 single thing, but having Alyssa there Saturday was definitely a factor. She couldn't make it Friday but was there Saturday (she has been to busy with work to attend much practice this season, but she has played ultimate for 2 years before this).
Having a Boys B Team and a middle school team is valuable to the success of the entire program.
Spring 3000
Congratulations to Danica, Lydia, Meagan, Ashlie, Lake and the other players who have completed their spring 3000 throws. If you completed the spring 3000, please record your throws in this spreadsheet . You will be recognized at an upcoming practice or team party. A special shout out to Lake, who went above and beyond the 3000 and hit 5000 during fall, winter, and spring. His throws speak for themselves about the time he has put in to become a better player.
Thank all of you for your dedication.
Everyone, please be sure to congratulate these players. Their hard work has not only made them better players, it has made your team better.
I encourage everyone to take this challenge during the summer.
I will be posting about our summer ultimate practices and other opportunities to play over the summer in the next day or 2. Keep an eye out for that update. I want everyone to play hard over the summer! ;-)
