Fall season 2020 is here! Not surprisingly, this season will be unlike any other past seasons due to the ongoing pandemic. USA, UUDA, and the coaches have spent hours in coordination to provide an opportunity to play ultimate, have fun, and of course be safe while doing so. The admins, coaches and all of us are still learning how best to run an ultimate league during a pandemic. Please be patient with this process. Those administering the league welcome your ideas on how to make it run more smoothly, so don't be afraid to speak up! Here are the plans for this upcoming season.
See details here: https://utahultimate.org/e/fall-league
Divisions
Because of covid-19, they changed the league format a little this year.
There will be no tournaments; instead the last few weeks of league will be a playoff.
Competition is 5v5, except for girls league, which is 3v3
There are 4 divisions this season, separated by age rather than school grade (as has normally been the case): U15 Girls, U15 Open, U19 Girls, U19 Open.
All divisions are 5v5 format.
'Open' division means that either gender is allowed to play in this division, but there is not a designated gender ratio; in other words, no requirement to match genders.
Girls divisions are restricted to girls only.
'U' is short for 'Under' (like Under 19). Players who have not turned 15 as of Aug 31, 2020 would be in the U15 division, and players who have not turned 19 as of Aug 31, 2020 are eligible for the U19 division. This is different from previous seasons where eligibility was based on grade in school. It means that recently graduated seniors are still eligible to play, provided they meet the age cutoff, and 9th graders are still eligible to play in the U15 division, provided they meet the age cutoff as well. Girls are allowed to play in the girls division in addition to open (both at the same time). Girls division is 3v3. on Saturday mornings.
Teams:
"Grizzlies": Garrett has put together a team of mostly older players (juniors and seniors).
Grizzlies team: Garrett, Zander, Bryson, Makay, Luke, Hayden, Quinn, Brayden, Meagan (?), Saydee (?)
Hopefully Megan will be coaching this team
"CHills": The remaining high school players plus a few of the top middle school players are playing on this high school team.
CHills team: Harrison, Jared, Ia (?), Myles (?), Katrina, Lydia, Maddie, Manaye (?), Mason, Luca, Sasuke, Bryson C (?) + probably a couple Tville players and other CH players who haven't been coming to practice, if they show up (Fisher, Ian, Glenn, etc) *Not sure how many of our girls are going to be able to play on Thursdays, but hopefully some of you can!
"CHUMS": The Copper Hills Ultimate Middle School team.
CHUMS team: Mason, Luca, Sasuke, Dallin, Tennyson, Charlie, Max, Sawyer, Gray, Branson, Bryson C (?), Myles (?)
Girls have elected to play on one of the boys teams. Girls are also eligible to play in girls league Saturday morning in addition to one of the boy's teams. Because our girls are busy with work and other obligations, we probably won't consistently have enough CH girls on Saturday mornings to field a CH only girls team. Just show up Saturday morning girls, and you will play, regardless of how many other CH girls show up. You will be combined with other girls there to form teams as needed.
Registration: https://utahultimate.org/e/fall-league
You need 2 registrations:
1) At https://utahultimate.org/e/fall-league, click 'Register' and follow the prompts. Choose 'CHUMS MS' (U15) or Grizzlies or CHills (U19)
2) At https://play.usaultimate.org/members. Choose 'affiliate membership'. In step 1 during the utahultimate.org registration, you will probably be given the chance to register with USAU as well. If you do, you can skip this step #2.
Cost:
$45 utahultimate league registration +
$14 usaultimate affiliate membership =
$59 total per player.
*Players who payed usaultimate fees in the spring in anticipation of spring season that never materialized would not need to pay the usaultimate membership again, as that membership is good for 1 year. You would still need to pay the utahultimate league cost.
Schedule:
Practices are Monday, Wednesday at 5pm and Saturday at 8:30 at Park Village Park, 7600s 4800w.
League Games will be Thursday afternoon / evenings 9/17-10/29
Girls 3v3 league games will be Saturday mornings.
Watch for a game schedule including exact times & opponents coming soon!
There will be no tournaments this season. Tournaments are a staple of ultimate competition, but they are risky during the pandemic because they are large gatherings, so for safety, there will be no tournaments.
Because of low numbers for our Fall Girls League, and registration problems, we are offering our Fall Girls 3v3 tournament this Saturday for FREE to all girls age 19 and under across the state! Those without a USAU membership will be charged $15 at sign in. Here's the details!
When: September 19 8:30-Noon
Where: Galena Hills Park, 12500 S 550 W, Draper, UT 84020
What: Fall Girls 3v3 Tournament! Bring a team or we will have one for you to join!
Cost: FREE for those with a USAU membership. $15 for those without a membership, due at sign in.
COVID: Fields will be distanced as much as possible. Players and spectators will be asked to socially distance as much as possible, including during sign in. Players will be asked to wear face coverings during sign in, and whenever possible throughout the tournaments. Some games will require a face covering by all players when on the field.
Those interested can pre-register here to expedite sign in.
Those who have previously signed up for Fall Leaguein the U19 or U15 Girls division will be refunded accordingly by September 25.
Uniforms:
We normally put in a uniform order at the beginning of each season, if enough players want to purchase a uniform. Watch for an email about uniforms soon after the season starts. I suspect that we may not order uniforms this season, given the pandemic and a lower number of new players than in other seasons. But we will see!
*Uniforms are not required, and I have extra uniforms you can borrow for games. But a uniform is not required - simply bring a white shirt and a dark shirt to every game.
Masks: You are required to wear a face covering during games. Although you may be allowed to remove them during game play. Spectators will also be required to wear masks.
3000 Challenge & Swag: Throw 3000 throws before the end of fall season and receive your choice of swag (most players choose a new disc, but there are other swage items available).
