This week's schedule:
Mon 10/22 & Tue 10/23 practice @ 5p @ Park Village Park
Come refine your team skills during these last few practices of the season.
We will be hitting the team skills hard. H & vert stack, cutting, force and zone.
Although we will be working less on individual skills during practice, look for coaches to pull players aside for individual coaching more. Where the repetition of throw, throw, throw and cut, cut, cut are highly beneficial in the early season and the off-season, during this late season push we'll be looking at the small tweaks to your game that will give you the biggest bang for your buck. Things we already know, we just forget. Things like:
keep your eye on your mark and don't look back for the disc until you hear 'up', smart cuts. Timing. Take what the defense gives you. No banana cuts! throw to space, make your receiver run to the disc. run all the way through the disc. Keeping a good force. pivoting & faking.
Drills: crossover drill with a mark - Around the world drill - 'Keep away' cutting drill (come to practice to see what these are all about)
Spirit & calls: Call your own timeouts. does this contribute or take away from spirit of the game? How? - Injury timeouts. - Rule discussions and disputes - Spirit circles and spirit timeouts: http://www.wfdf.org/sotg/what-are-spirit-circles - A pick occurs whenever an offensive player moves in a manner that causes a defensive player guarding (II.G) an offensive player to be obstructed by another player. Obstruction may result from contact with, or the need to avoid, the obstructing player. - best perspective on OB & disc down calls - Violations & resetting stall count - Turnovers: A turnover occurs when:
The thrower catches a legally thrown disc. However, it is not a turnover if another player touches the disc during its flight unless the thrower intentionally deflected the disc off another player.
The thrower calls a team time-out when none remains while the disc is live or in play.
An offensive player intentionally assists a teammate's movement to catch a pass . If a defender assists a teammate's movement to block or intercept a pass, the intended receiver is awarded possession.
An offensive player uses an item of equipment to assist in catching a pass (e.g., throwing a hat or shirt at the disc). If a defender uses an item of equipment to assist in blocking or intercepting a pass, the intended receiver is awarded possession.
Thu 10/25 HS League CHA @ 4:30 @ SLCo Equestrian Park. Meet after school at 2:30 by the relocatables to carpool. The CHB game has been cancelled/postponed* (probably vs Krakens Z on 11/1 instead), but I will allow any CHB players who want to play to get at least a little game time. CHUMS: http://utahultimate.org/e/middle-school-fall-league/schedule/stage/126132 CHA: http://utahultimate.org/t/ultimate-chills
Thu 10/25 MS League Playoffs @ 5p @ SLCo Equestrian Park. 2 games. We are in the upper bracket with the 2 LP teams. Aside from the LP teams, we are the only team who has a chance to win it all. The other teams are in the lower bracket and have a losing record. Go CHUMS! http://utahultimate.org/e/middle-school-fall-league/schedule/stage/126132
Fri-Sat 10/26-27 Lone Peak Invitational Tournament. SLCo Equestrian Park. Friday meet at PVP at 2p. Saturday plan on meeting at Park Village Park at 7:45a to carpool. Only A Team received a bid. Any B Team players who show up to play will be given at least some game time on the A Team. Schedule is below. Weather forecast looks great: sunny and 70. Remember your water and sun protection! (LP=Lone Peak, Mon=Monarch HS, Colorado, West=Krakens, SV=Sky View, GC=Green Canyon, & LW=Lehi/Westlake I think)
Looking forward:
Thu 11/1 (tentative) CHB vs Krakens B
Sat 11/3 Halloween Hat @ SLCo Equestrian Park. Play ultimate in your Halloween costume! This is a community tournament, not a school tournament, but I encourage everyone to participate. See details in last week's update below.
Fri-Sat 11/9-10 HS Mixed State Tournament @ Legacy Events Center, Farmington. I have registered & paid for both CHA & CHB. http://utahultimate.org/e/utah-high-school-mixed-state-championship
The end of the season is swiftly approaching. I encourage all of you to get your 3000 challenge throws or stamina challenge workouts in NOW and get it finished. Remember it's not just for you, it's for your team. CHA lost to Jordan by only a few points. CHB lost to Lehi on universe point. CHMS lost to OC by 2 and tied with Krakens Y. Completing this challenge could make the difference that puts your team over the top to win those games. Don't put it off until it's too late! In case you didn't see it last week, I reduced the mileage and ladders requirement from 100 to 50, making this challenge VERY doable.
Winter pickup practice will be Wednesdays 3:30-5 and Saturdays 8:30-10:30. Yeah, it's cold. And we'll play even with snow on the ground. But this is your chance to make up some ground on most teams who will not be playing in the winter. Make your team competitive in the spring by playing in the winter. Oh, and we will have a winter 3000 and speed/stamina challenge. Let's keep improving!
