Fall Challenge: Parents, please encourage your kids to complete a challenge (or both). We have 4 weeks left to complete the challenges. There is still time, even if you start now! 3000 throws takes about 8-12hrs. The key is having the discipline to get off your phone, put down the video games, and just get out there and do it. The purpose of the challenges is to encourage all of you to just push a little more. Just do a little more, to up your game just a little. Over time you will notice a significant difference. After calculating the time it takes to complete the speed/stamina challenge, I am reducing the requirement to 50 miles and 50 ladders (still 1000 calf raises & 1000 squats). Again, the purpose is not to make you a track star or to get you a free disc, but it's to encourage you to just do a little more, to just get a little better outside of practice. I estimate it should take about 20 hours total to complete the speed/stamina challenge: 50 mi: 10 hrs, 50 ladders: 3-4 hrs, 1000 calf raises: 3 hrs, and 1000 squats: 3hrs. You not only help yourself by accepting the challenges, you strengthen your team. Enter your totals here: http://bit.ly/2O3m66K. Go to work!
This week's schedule:
Mon 10/15 Practice 5p for all players. Working on: Reading the disc, Not throwing hard, quick passes at close range, Remind about strike calls, up calls, Keep your eyes on the person you are defending, Spirit, Attack position. warm up with 2 laps of give & go. Stretch with pivots & attack position. Demonstrate how to do it without traveling. Power position drill with a defender. Breakside throw scrimmaging.
Tue 10/16 5p CHUMS vs OC @ Sherwood Park
Tue 10/16 5p HS Practice at PVP
Thu 10/18 5p Games @ Park Village Park. All teams. We will be creating a 'CHZ' team just today: a combination of players from each team + coaches
5p CHA vs CHB, CHUMS vs CHZ
6p CHUMS vs CHB, CHA vs CHZ
Note that all 10/18 games are at Park Village Park, not Sherwood Park or the Equestrian Park!
Sat 10/20 8:30-10:30 pickup practice. Anyone interested in playing with the adult pickup group afterward at either Sugarhouse or Cottonwood, I'd be happy to drive!
Looking forward:
Note that we have 2 new calendar items: 1) Tuesday's CHUMS game and 2) Team dinner after practice on 11/8 before the state tournament.
Upcoming tournaments:
Middle school league playoffs 10/25. This is the final middle school event of the season, but we will continue to practice through the winter - and keep running & throwing! http://utahultimate.org/e/middle-school-fall-league/schedule/division/Open/stage/126132 . You will notice there are 2 brackets. We are in the upper bracket because we have only lost 1 league game. Copper Hills is the only team that can prevent a Lone Peak vs Lone Peak championship game like last year. To do so, we need to beat LPX again in the first game, after which we would play LPY for the championship.
HS Lone Peak Invite. 10/26-27 at the Equestrian Park. This is an exciting tournament because at least 1 out of state team from Colorado will be participating. I was only able to get 1 bid for this tournament, so that is going to be our CHA team. But any B Team players who show up and want to play, I will ensure that you get at least a little game time. I'd also encourage you to use the time to throw on the sidelines and work on your game.
Halloween Hat. 11/3. This is not a HS or a MS tournament, although there will be many HS & MS players there. It is a community event open to any players, youth or adult. Parents are invited to play. You will need to pay for the Halloween Hat, either online or at the tournament (http://utahultimate.org/e/halloween-hat). Hat tournament format means the teams will be 'pulled from a hat', in other words, randomly, although skill level is taken into account to avoid lopsided teams. https://www.facebook.com/events/330831357684761/?notif_t=event_calendar_create¬if_id=1539371502582864
HS Mixed States. 11/9-10. This tournament caps off our fall season. This is a large tournament that will include teams that you have not seen in league: All of the Utah county teams (Lone Peak, Timpview, etc), Cache teams (Green Canyon, Sky View), plus Layton and probably Jordan and Skyline. Exciting!
No huck practices: For some of the best throwers on the team, we become overly dependent on 'huck and pray' plays, where we just throw it deep and pray that our team catches it. Deep throws aren't bad, but I want to encourage us to become more comfortable with the short game. So, for our big throwers: Garret, Anthony, Ben, Hunter, Brayden, Quinn, and Mason: except for tournament weeks, during all upcoming practice scrimmages, if you throw a pass longer than 20 yards it is a violaton. The disc will have to go back to the thrower (unless the pass is dropped, in which case it is a turnover). Jack, Kellen, MaKay and Hayden are also invited to take this challenge for upcoming practices, but it is optional for you.
Lashbrook Designs Sponsorship: We would like to thank Thane's Dad and Lashbrook Designs for a generous sponsorship donation that will help us pay for our tournaments and not have to pass our tournament costs on to each player. To say thank you, I encourage you to check out their website: https://www.lashbrookdesigns.com/
