This is to notify anyone interested about the Santa Monica, California 4 on 4 beach Ultimate tournament January 5th (Saturday) and 6th (Sunday). I talked with the tournament director Don Macatangay (dm@scyu.org) and he said it's totally cool to participate on Saturday and not Sunday since I notified him last year of intent to participate. He's a great guy!! He has emailed me today verifying his interest in our attendance. I told him we will be there! Who wants to go? Be cool to have multiple teams from Utah.

There is a U19 Boys, U19 Girls, U19 Mixed and U15 beginner tournament at this event - it's big! So if you want to put together a team of middle school kids, or a boys U19 team or a separate U19 girls team, or a U19 mixed team here's your chance! Be sure if you set up your own team you have a chaperone registered with USA Ultimate and all players are registered with USA Ultimate for the 2019 calendar year.

The beach field is smaller than a standard grass field. They recommend sand sox (neoprene) for beach ultimate. I am putting together a U19 Girls Competitive Team to play some pickup on Friday, January 4th with local Santa Monica players and then we will play in the tournament on Saturday, January 5th. My team will not be playing on Sunday, January 6th.

If girls from other schools in Utah want to join the Sky View girls team on this trip, they are SUPER welcome and encouraged/invited to join us! Of course you may choose to form your own school team and play that way too! Be awesome either way!

If you go to the event website you can register to be notified when registration opens and then you can register your own team at that time. Again do it quick. The registration fills up fast!

Being that it is 4 on 4 I am expecting to field 1 team of 8-10, possibly two teams of 6 or 7 depending on how things go and who is interested. I am expecting that beach ultimate is more exhausting and thus will demand more rest than ultimate played on grass fields even if the fields are smaller on the beach. Running in sand is brutal.

My family will be flying out Thursday, January 3rd and flying back home late Saturday or first thing Sunday. So if you are a girl wanting to travel with my family, that's the plan and as soon as I get our flights reserved ( we are watching for super deals to LAX to pop up) I will let you know. If you want I can notify you of the deal we find as soon as we find it so you can book the same deal. We usually find deals that last 24 hours or so.

This Hampton Inn Hotel, if split 4 ways, is reasonably priced ($250/night + taxes) and offers a free hot breakfast. Many hotels in the area do not offer a free breakfast even if they are higher priced. It is walking distance from our beach game fields.

You can find homes to rent right near the beach for $300 - $500 per night that sleep 10 people if you're interested. Just search on VRBO or Airbnb for the homes. Right now there are many available, but in the next few weeks, that will change quickly.

Again, REMINDER, this tournament is in 2019, so some of you will need to renew your USA Ultimate Membership for 2019 BEFORE this trip and some of you already paid for a 2018 membership this fall which included your 2019 membership in that price. Pay for your USA Ultimate 2019 membership in the next couple months. Don't put it off until January 3rd. Over the holidays things just tend to not work as well - especially online reservation systems, etc...

If you are going or would like to go as a parent, fan, it would be fun to have a big group from Utah present!

In forming my team, my first priority will be to girls that played for Sky View last spring (Mikinley, Cassidy) and then it will be first come first serve to other girls who want to play with us.

I need to hear from girls under 19 years of age that want to go and play or the parents of those girls. I need to hear from you soon. Registration for this tournament will open in a couple days and the registration fills up FAST! If you're a parent traveling with your daughter and making your own arrangements for the trip and your daughter wants to play on my team, please just let me know so I can register her on the team and not worry about her travel and lodging info.

If you want to play on my team and didn't play for me last year, please send me your USA Ultimate Member #, name, cell phone and USA Ultimate email for communication and that should be good for now.

Here's my estimation of cost per person if you stay at the Hampton, get a shuttle from the airport to the hotel, and have already paid your 2019 USA Ultimate Membership:

Hotel: $70 per night x 2 = $140

No rental car = $0

Food = $50 per day x 3 = $150 (Remember breakfast is FREE at the Hampton Inn)

Tournament Fee = unknown yet but estimating $50 per player

Travel to LAX via air = $100 - $200 round trip depending on how diligent you are to sign up when a deal shows up.

Optional neoprene beach socks = $23

total ESTIMATED cost per player = $573. Could be less, could be more. Time will tell.

It's going to be the ULTIMATE beach party!
