Scratchboard

For this project we had to use scratch board to grid and match an image using a full range of value. We started with a value strip to get used to using the material. I first gridded an image of my cat, then matched the same grid into my scratch board. From there it was matching the values. I started with his head and worked my way to his body. For the background I did some cross hatching. I did tighter hashes on the bottom half of the page and more spaced out ones towards the top to show depth. The original image just had a black background which wasn't interesting. The last thing I did was the whiskers. Besides coloring with scratch board as a kid, I've never seriously used the material. It's like everything's opposite because you color the lighter shades and not the darker shades like you would with paper and a pencil. I really enjoyed it though. Also it didn't take much time to finish the piece. I wanted to use the picture of my cat because it had a full range of values and it is also an organic shape versus a non-organic shape such as a building.
