Oil Pastel Portrait

For this project I chose to "draw" Taylor Swift. The goal of this project was to take a small square of information and combine all those shades of color into one using oil pastels. You could not regularly draw shapes; the end result was like a pixelated image. To begin I gridded both my papers with a light pencil. I then started on the bottom, mixing black with some blues or brown to create the background. I then went back up top working from left to right, shading the top of her hair in. This was extremely time consuming as each square of hair was different from the next. I then worked on her face, starting on her eyes. I had to mix some blues and greens together to match her eye color. This was difficult because I couldn't draw the pupil or the iris and the eye ended up looking like a rectangle. I used to same process for the lips. It's hard to draw what you see rather than what you know. Her skin tone was easier to draw than the hair because there were less colors to mix together. After I finished that I moved on to the rest of her hair. Overall I liked this project. It took a while but after I got the hang of it was pretty simple.
