Circles

The theme of this project was “circles”. I immediately thought of mandalas. I started by water coloring medium size circles on a piece of paper. I used a mix of purple and blue because I knew I wanted to use cool colors to create a sense of calmness. I created the darkest circles in the middle of the page (purposefully making it uneven) and then barely colored the circles on the outer edges to make contrast. Next I used a fine point pen to make the mandalas. I had them overlapping because it looked more natural as if they flowed into one another. This was time consuming as it took time to think about how to make them look appealing. I used a stencil in order to draw perfect circles, otherwise I freehanded it as I liked the unpolished look. If I were to fix anything, I would work to activate the negative space. Although I do feel as though the focus is very busy, a contrasting color may be interesting as the background.
