Independent Project #2

This project was an independent project so materials and subject matter was completely open-ended. I originally wanted to do a self-portrait but after attempting to grid and watercolor I decided to shift gears. I chose to do a one point perspective drawing because I really like the mathematical process of that kind of drawing. The end result is always satisfying and it is very clean. I started with my vanishing point and drew the horizon line and the back wall. I then drew all my lines connected to the vanishing point to achieve the one point perspective. I didn't really have a set plan when I started drawing but I knew I wanted to design the interior of a building with huge windows with a great view of a garden. I ran with this idea and made the back wall a window and most of the right wall a window. I decided to switch it up and add horizontal panels of windows on the left wall. I also added a skylight to add to the openness and airiness of the room.

I stuck with a neutral color palette for the room itself and used selective color for the garden. I brought the red from the flowers in the window into a panel on the floor of the room. I used watercolor to give me a nice wash of color without it being too pigmented. I wanted to keep the piece light. I used a fine point pen to go over my lines because I really like the neatness of one point perspective and this would be partly taken away if I left the watercolor as is. It was relatively easy to go over my lines--just time consuming.

Overall I am happy with my piece. The one thing that bothers me is how the room is so centered it's almost too perfect. If I were to do it over again, I would make it not so centered and create imbalance in the piece.
