Observational Color

For this project the goal was to use your observational skills to draw an object (preferably one that could fit in your hand) and use color to manipulate it. I chose a bind clip because the shapes were intriguing. After I sketch the binder clip with a 2H pencil I evaluated the shape and decided the curve of the silver metal part looks like a key hole, I decided to draw two keys. I then thought the keys looked like the spoon that held spaghetti and a city landscape, crashing into waves. I just flew with this whimsical idea and then started added different things like crazy. The shape of the key hole sparked my imagination because I thought I could turn them into Russian buildings.

After sketching out my whole plan I added color. I used colored pencil because it is a medium I really like but it is not something I am particularly good at; I wanted to challenge myself. In the end, I dislike how yellow the drawing is. There is a lot of negative space that I don't feel works in this context. I thought the finishing of the colored pencils did not look good, it looked sloppy. Overall I am not particularly happy with the finished product I wish I had chosen a different medium. This was definitely out of my comfort zone as it was more imaginative than my other pieces and I used colored pencils which I am not entirely comfortable with using.
