Assemblage Sculpture

For this project we had to create a flying bird sculpture made of different materials. This materials could not include stuff such as paint, markers, or pencils. I guess you could call them "non-conventional" items. I decided to do a penguin playing because I am familiar with the bird and I also wanted to make it an emperor penguin and attach and crown to it to be funny. I shaped the body with newspaper, masking tape, and duct tape. To make the wings I used duct tape to attach the wings. I tilted the wings out because part of the project was to have a flying bird, so it could eventually be hung up. To find my non-convential materials I went through my recycling bin. In there I can across a Tropicana orange juice lid. It was shaped a beak and was the perfect color for a penguin. When I glued this to my penguin it was not proportional as it was too big but I think it added character. I used paint samples to cover the body. I cut the samples out in hearts because it was different and unexpected. When placing the feathers I was careful to arrange them light to dark or dark to light, so they were always either fading dark or light. This technique made the feather placement look well thought out and overall more appealing to the eye. I used hot glue to attach the feathers. I made a crown because it is an "emperor penguin". I made the crown out of yellow paint samples. I made the eyes by making dots with the hot glue and drawing a black pupil and then one green and one blue iris. I made them different colors like huskys because I thought it would draw attention to the piece. I used string and an eye screw to attach it to the ceiling. The overal goal of this project was to create a flock of flying birds to hang in our new school. I am very happy with my finished product.
