Animals in Color

For this project the goal was to use our observational drawing skills to depict animals in color. The materials were completely open ended. When I went to draw my animal, the donkey, I got overwhelmed by the whole figure so I decided to split it up into two sides. I originally was going to have them both face the same way, but I ran out of room so I had them face each other.

I sketched the outline of the donkey with some shading. And then I knew I didn't want to use the actual color of the donkey, so I used the rainbow and split it to do the two pieces of the donkey. I used watercolor because it does pretty fast and I like the texture. After using the watercolor, I used a fine point pen to draw a box around the two figures and then did lines around the two. I made it so the squares were turned into frames, as if they were hanging on the wall.

I'd say the composition is strong; I like how it causes the viewer to look deeper; it's not a regular animal figure. I like the use of color; I usually don't use as much color, so that was sort of fun. If I were to do this over again, I would make sure there is not so much negative space.
