For this project the goal was to take a Maine icon or icons and put our spin on it. I knew right away I wanted to create a lighthouse. Every year my friend from New Jersey will visit Maine and we will always go visit this lighthouses near her summer home. Lighthouses remind me of summer and adventures.
I was not originally planning on using paper but I started this project late and had to use my resources. I used several index cards in this project. I used watercolor to create soft washes on the cards. I used green, blue, red, grey, and yellow. I wanted to go with a softer color palette because it reminded me of summertime in Maine. I created several templates; waves, fish, stars, and trees. These things represent Maine (except the stars which I used as lights for the lighthouse). I used a grey sharpie (choosing not use black to keep the color palette on the lighter side but still wanting to create contrast) and outlined the outline of each copied shape. I wanted to create a simplified version of things associated with Maine/lighthouses. I cut all the shapes out and attached them to cone structure I had made out of paper. I used the red/pinkish index cards to create stripes around the lighthouse. I created texture with the waves and the fish at the bottom. I also hot glued three trees together in a triangle shape to create a more 3D element to attach to the structure.
I like the way my project turned out. I’m not in love with it but I do like the color scheme and the way I created texture. I like the way it is so soft. If I were to do this again I would make sure the red stripes lined up and were more smooth. I also would probably watercolor the over structure before I attached the shapes.
