Look Inside

For this project the goal was to create something that had something inside it; to make the viewer look twice. I originally thought of Russian nesting dolls because there’s a always a doll inside of another doll and as a kid I thought this was the coolest. I wanted to play off of Russian nesting dolls so I settled on the idea of nesting eggs (because eggs go inside a nest).

To begin I first constructed the nest from newspaper. I made a circle and crinkled the newspaper to build a wall around the circle. I knew I wanted the color palette of this piece to be very soft and pastel. I used plain white paper and cut out white triangles to create the texture on the outside of the nest. Next I found plastic Easter eggs. I found three eggs that were all different sizes and fit in one another. Keeping with the pastel color scheme, I painted the eggs light blue, light pink, and light violet. A lot of coats of paint was needed to get solid colors! I originally planned to paint patterns on the eggs but I found inspiration from green raffia. This reminded me of grass and easter baskets. I used hot glue to glue the green raffia on the inside of the eggs to create texture. I then arranged the eggs inside of each other inside the nest. I unevenly stacked them on top of each other to create imbalance and draw the viewer’s attention in. I then used Cadbury Mini eggs on the inside of the eggs, to show even smaller eggs. To add texture, I used the green raffia on the bottom of the nest and glued down fake flowers. I also used the fake flowers to stand up over the edges of the nest. Keeping to the same color scheme, I used white and pink flowers. I also hot glued some green leaves to create contrast.

Overall I am medium-happy with how my project turned out. I think it would have been cool to add color, texture, or pattern to the walls of the nest but the inside is busy so perhaps simplicity is best. I know for the most part I used a lot of already made materials and arranged them so I wish I handmade more of my piece. I feel like my idea wasn’t really together at the beginning and at the end I was throwing stuff on my piece.
