Extended Blind Contour

For this project the goal was to make one or multiple blind contour drawings and to extend it into a whole drawing. I ended up doing three blind contour drawings before arriving at one that I knew I wanted to manipulate. This is a goat. I drew it with my eyes closed and used one continuous line.

I was inspired by the Lascaux Caves in France which I am learning about in Art History. This freeform goat reminded me of the animals depicted in the caves. To go off this idea I used simplistic colors. I used multiple shades of brown to highlight the neutral color palette derived from natural resources. Originally when I did my blind contour drawing I used a fine point pen. I then went in with a thicker tipped sharpie to trace over this outline and then went around the whole shape with a fine point line. I wanted to play with line weight. I also wanted to play with the border, so I used a compass to draw a circle around the animal. I wanted to have the goat push outside of the borders to make it more interesting to the eye. I used watercolor to get the different shades of brown. I used green in the background to contrast against the brown, but also kept it neutral.

Overall, I am happy with my final product. I like doing blind contour drawings because you don't have to worry about getting the shapes exactly right. Similar to the Beautiful Oops project, it's about making the best out of what you've drawn.
