CRUMPLED PAPER

September 2018

For this project the goal was to create a "Time Capsule"; make preliminary drawings to act as a starting point to mark the year's progress. I chose to do my time capsules in pure contour. It's been a while since I've done observational realistic drawing and I wanted to focus on the lines.

The first drawing was a close up of the body. I chose to do three views of my body, specifically my hand. I sketched the lines in pencil and then went back in to add the different line weights (thicker ones for lines that are close and thin ones for those far away). The end result is a family simple drawing, but I believe the composition is strong along with the mark making.

The second drawing is a still life of my past. I chose to draw my childhood blanket which I used to carry everywhere. It was a comfort item and I used it as one for quite awhile. To create my composition I started the blanket on my desk. Originally the paper was too big for my drawing, so I made a border. I purposefully drew the border so some of the blanket would spill out of the frame, because I thought that would draw intrigue. I think the composition on this drawing is very strong.

The third drawing is of my future (or what I hope to be my future). I drew a pair of earrings that my mother lets me borrow for the school dances; they're classic pearls. Next is a ring I have a chance of inheriting from my family. The gem is a pink tourmaline and it's a beautiful ring. Lastly, I drew the compass necklace that was gifted to me by my best friend who is incredibly important to me and who I hope will at least be in my not-too-distant future. I wear this necklace every day not only as a reminder of him, but of my future and the places I will go.

The last drawing is a crumpled piece of paper. I chose to draw the creases of a crumpled piece of paper rather than a folded origami figure, because I thought the lines would be interesting to observe. I just crumpled a sticky-note and sketched the lines in pencil and went over the lines in pen. I actually really like this drawing, I think I could've used the negative space better or have made the border smaller.

Overall, I like my time capsule drawings. Compared to the last two projects these drawings feel more true to my style of art. I like working with black and white. It is always amazing to see how far I've come in the past four years. I think the line quality and the compositions are strong. I think my observational drawing has improved immensely since I was a freshmen. I've pasted my freshmen time capsule below:
