Environmental Advocacy

For this project, I went through a lot of ideas before I arrived at my final product. Originally I planned on pursing photography because it's always been a hobby of mine. The plan was to take pictures of Maine and then distribute them in some form that advocated for the environment. I quickly lost interest in this project because I didn't have the time to go out and explore. I then decided to make t-shirts using screen-printing. I picked an extinct species: otters. I even made a slogan "You Otter Care About the Environment". After I set up my screen and washed it all off, I ran into a problem. The image did not transfer. Frustrated, I ditched this project and decided to start all over again. Winslow Park in Freeport is my happy place. I spend a lot of time there walking my dog, picnicing with my family, and hanging out with my friends. Both of my pieces are pictures of Winslow that I took.

I hadn't used acrylic paint since freshmen year so that experience was really interesting. I found out that I really like working with acrylic paint because there is a lot of freedom with brushstrokes. The circle is wood and the rectangle is stretched canvas. I like the circle one better because I think the composition is much more intriguing. Nevertheless, I think both pieces turned out well. To tie in environmental advocacy I used paint markers to display marine waste statistics.
