Composite Figure

For this project the goal was to create a composite figure. In class, we all wrote down two random nouns and then we put them all in a jar and picked out two to use for this project. I drew the two slips, "moped" and "pencil". I was inspired by my words and I thought they fit together nicely.

I drew the moped first and then incorporated the pencils into the line drawing. I set the pencils on the bottom of the moped. I sketched the shape first in pencil and then traced over it with a pen. I used a reference image online for the moped because I didn't know exactly what they looked like. I thought about leaving this as a line drawing, but decided that color would enhance the image. I was just going to use red, gray, and black, but then wanted to use yellow for the pencils to make them pop. I then used blue also because I needed a contrasting color. I really like the look of primary colors; I don't often use a lot of color, but I think the use is strong in this piece specifically. I made the colors mostly flat, with some shading, but I didn't want to take away from the drawing. I had a lot of negative space, so I cropped the border, put another border around it and filled in the negative space with black to add contrast. I think the composition is strong.

Overall, I'm very happy with this piece of art. I was definitely outside of my comfort zone with the subject, but worked with materials I was comfortable with such as pen and watercolor. As I said, the composition is strong and is a solid graphic design. I think this would make a nice greeting card!
