Independent Project #3

This project was an independent project where the subject and material(s) were open ended. I began with a one point perspective drawing. I wanted to continue with my last project and create rooms inside of rooms. I was very ambitious and chose a very large piece of paper. After I had started this piece I realized I strongly disliked it and could not continue working on it. So I scrapped my idea and started something new. I was struggling with inspiration so I started with some blind contour self-portraits to get ideas flowing.

I did a few sketches and then did two self-portraits side by side connected to one another. I liked this idea of connection. I then used watercolor to manipulate this sketch. I started with the flower crowns to add color. I was inspired by Frida Kahlo and her self-portrait (although it is obvious that these are more upbeat than hers). I used different skin tones because one thing that really bothers me in main-stream media is the constant use of caucasian people with very little diversity. I liked the light wash of water color against the harsher black lines. For the background I used a very light blue wash to not take away from the faces but also contrast them.

Overall I am happy with my art piece. It is different than what I normally do but I know from the past I really like blind contour (it allows me to manipulate my art in different ways).
