Scholastics #5

I took a different approach to this project. Given that I haven't much inspiration lately, I had my best friend draw a beginning shape for me. He originally drew a cursive "J" and I began to fill in the shapes with colors and patterns.

I knew I wanted to play with the border of this piece. I kept adding borders thinking they'd literally be the last border, but I liked the look of all the lines. I started with the colors red and blue and black. I originally thought I'd keep with these three colors, but as I developed my piece, I thought it'd be more intriguing to add more colors. I extended the piece beyond the square in the middle, to create these prism-like shapes. Looking at it now, it looks like a stage set-up, with the performer's name in the middle. I used fine-point pens to create the fine lines and used sharpies fill in the big shapes. There was no rhyme or reason to my lines which made it really fun to make. This piece is more abstract than my past pieces, but I like it.

Overall, I really like this piece. I like how the whole piece is full of rigid lines and then in the center, there is loose cursive writing. I think that creates an interesting contrast.
