AP Studio Art

I went into AP Studio Art this year with the idea that it would be pretty similar to last year. And it was in the sense that for the most part, I was able to explore what I wanted. However, I saw a difference in the quality and creativity of my work. Last year my concentration was women and the images I created were quite serious. This year, I was able to add more color and figures that broke borders–my approach was more playful.

I didn't do much realistic renderings with the exception of my raccoons in charcoal. I wish I had focused on naturalistic drawing more. While I had a concentration about word stories, I found that my pieces were very loosely related, if even related at all. I think it was hard to move on from my concentration of women because naturally I wanted to revert back to what I know. I tried to branch out from using pen this year, trying out charcoal, acrylic, and digital media. I tend to create work that is more refined and I tried to think outside of the box.

I used text quite a lot this year. I've always liked working with text, but this year I really thought about how words can be effective in a piece of art. One of my favorite ways to get inspiration is flipping through magazines–I'm immediately drawn to the words, letters, and sayings. One piece that I'm proud of would have to be the composite figure of the pencil and the motorcycle. I love the composition and the use of primary colors.

Not only can I see my growth over the past year, but also my growth over the past four years. The line quality and ideas of of my current pieces and are far more developed than the ones I made freshman year. It is satisfying to look back on my work and recognize the progress that I have made as an artist.
