Northern Cambria High School is starting PBIS. PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. PBIS are methods used to support students' desired behavior. PBIS’s goal is to create a positive school environment where students feel safe and behave appropriately. We are trying to improvise decision making, positivity, respect, and a feeling of safety.
For PBIS to be successful, it needs help from the students, faculty, parents, and the whole community. This will improve communication in the classroom, student involvement, and social and emotional development. It will also increase family engagement and social skills, and will reduce bullying, suspensions, and inappropriate behavior.
INTERVIEW
During our PBIS meeting I quoted some of the things Mrs. Prebish and Ms. Dillion had said. I had asked them ¨Why did you start PBIS in the high school?¨
Mrs. Prebish said ¨We needed a way to encourage positive behavior and during the summer I dug deeper into what PBIS was about. The middle school has done it for years, we needed to bring it back to the highschool. I also read that most high schools don't do this but thinks it is needed.¨ Ms. Dillion added onto this by saying ¨I feel students kind of forget about it transitioning into high school.¨
A few of the quotes I quoted these two individuals saying during this meeting are:
¨Everyone can be successful¨ and ¨If you messed up you can still be successful.¨ These two quotes are from Mrs. Prebish
Mrs. Prebish also said ¨I do believe that most people will change.¨ To add onto this she had said, ¨I've heard students say that this is motivating them to watch and keep up their grades, to not skip school, and working on mental health.¨
¨A half day game is an earn not a guarantee.¨ Mrs. Prebish had said. To add onto this Ms. Dillion said ¨You can't skip school to participate in the fun activities we have planned.¨
