The Chiefs
By: Mya Bradford
The Chiefs are one of the top teams in the NFL right now. The Chiefs are from Kansas City, Missouri. The team started just back in 1960 by the businessman Lamar Hunt. Throughout the years players have been traded but the team has still remained good. As of right now they are 4-1, losing one game when they fell to the Colts just by three points. Whether you don’t like them or not you have to admit that they are a pretty good team. The Chiefs have played well the past few years. Last year they almost made it into the Superbowl but they suffered an overtime loss with the Bengals. In total they have been in the superbowl three times and ended up winning two out of the three.
When you hear the Chiefs you may think of one of the most known players Patrick Mahomes who is also the quarterback. Mahomes has been part of this team since 2017. He is said to be one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL along with Josh Allen, Tom Brady, and Aaron Rodgers. In 2021 the Chief's awarded Mahomes with a record-setting extension which is a ten year $450 million dollar contract that took place this year and lasts up until the 2031 campaign. Before he was in the NFL he was going to college at Texas Tech and he was a backup quarterback and a baseball player. At 24 years old when he started playing on the Chiefs he became the third youngest player and youngest quarterback in the NFL. He is also the youngest player to ever win a league MVP and a Super Bowl Title.
This year during the draft they traded Tyreek Hill who was the Chief’s wide receiver to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for five draft selections. It is said that Hill got traded because he and the Chief’s didn’t see eye-to-eye on a contract extension. He signed a four year $120 million deal with $72.2 guaranteed with his new team this year. His love for football first started when he was seven. He started out playing flag football on a team called the “Pop Warner league.” Hill eventually gave himself the nickname “The Cheetah” because of how fast he is. The highest speed he reached was 23.24 miles per hour. When he attended Coffee High School he was a member of the track team he won the 100 meters and 200 meters. Before he got drafted into the NFL he attended Garden City Community College, Oklahoma State University, and the University of West Alabama where he was a football player and in track. Even though Hill is with the Dolphins now he still shows love for his old team and Mahomes. According to fox4kc.com, “I did watch the game. I was actually watching it with my dad. Me and my dad had a bet. My dad was actually going for the Bucs, and I told him ‘Man, that boy Pat, he’s just special,'” Hill said.
If you’re a fan of football I’m sure you have heard the name Travis Kelece many times. Kelece is the tight end for the Chief’s and he has been since 2013. Back in 2020, he signed a four year extension contract worth $57.25 million. This contract keeps him with the Chiefs until 2025. He has a brother Jason Kelece who plays on the Philadelphia Eagles. Both brothers went to college at the University of Cincinnati. Kelece holds a record for the most consecutive seasons with 1,000 receiving yards and a record for the most receiving yards by a tight end in a single season. If you watch the Chief’s games you can see his buddy Mahomes passing him the ball most of the time.
As of right now, the Chiefs are first in the AFC West 4-1, the Bills in the AFC East 4-1, the Ravens in the AFC North 3-2, Titans in the AFC South 3-2. The top five teams favored to make it to the Super Bowl are: Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers, and Buccaneers. I’m so excited for Super Bowl LVI. Mostly because Rhianna is performing at the halftime show. I think that the Chiefs and the Eagles will make it to the Super bowl!
