Christmas is coming soon and fast! Get your wrapping paper and tape out! About 85% of Americans celebrated the Christmas season in 2021.
In America, many puritans did NOT celebrate christmas due to the Pagan origins. Immigrants coming into America from Europe brought their beliefs with them. The Dutch brought their Sinter klaas and Germans brought their tree traditions in the 1700's. America started to finally come to the idea of Christmas in the 1800's. A man named Washington Irving wrote a book about coming together for dinner on a festive holiday. This book started to bring the idea to Americans by touching their hearts with the lovely tale. In 1822 a man by the name of Clement Clark wrote about a visit from St. Nicholas for his daughters. This book is now called The Night Before Christmas. This book modernized the idea of Santa Claus in America.
Christmas became a National holiday in 1870. After the Civil War people were looking for ways to feel united agin. President Ulysses S. Grant declared Christmas a national holiday.
