On Nov 3, 2022 Mrs. Kline and Mr. Jacobs, with the help of Mr. Staurch and Diane Bearer, took 63 students from their contemporary issues class to the county courthouse and jail. We left the school around 8 o'clock and got to the courthouse around 9:00 am. When we arrived at the courthouse we went to court room number 3 to watch Judge Krumenacker. We listened to three or four court cases before the Judge had talked to us. He explained what they do and gave us some important life lessons. The first case we had listened to was a young lady getting a marijuana charge. She then had to take a drug test at the courthouse to see if she got sentenced to jail on December 19th. Unfortunately it did come back positive. For two of the cases we watched they didn’t even show. The judge was nice enough to grant them another trial date. The last two cases we listened to were another drug case and an abuse case against a father and son. Soon after we had left.
We made it to the Cambria County Jail around 11:30. We started the afternoon by eating jail food. They had prepared a bologna and cheese sandwich for us; we also had carrots, celery, an apple, and some ketchup. The food truly wasn’t that bad. I think we all expected it to look and taste worse. They gave us a little tour and told us about what the inmates have to do everyday, how they live, and how they act. Towards the end of the trip the officers started telling us about different events that had happened. One of the main stories the officer was telling us was how they had to take contraband. Meaning you use something it’s not supposed to be used for. Other events from the officers were getting attacked by inmates.
