Time for another opinion piece from Mr. Roberts...

The problem with an opinion piece is it generally offends somebody. Then again, the problem with opinions is they are often presented as truth rather than opinion. Or 'my truth'. The problem with 'my truth' is 'my truth' really only boils down to 'my opinion' or 'my feelings'. These opinions are to be valued, but are as vulnerable to mistake as any other opinion - believing something doesn't make it true.

Whilst I am sure the opinion shared below will offend someone, please believe me when I stress this is not its intention. The intention/hope for a, striving to be reasonable person, when sharing an opinion, is to help develop the conversation and improve understanding of very complex ideas about our shared human experience.

Well, here's the opinion: As the headteacher of Little Green Junior School, I am totally committed to diversity, inclusion, anti racism and anti prejudice.  This is so that we can learn together and develop together - a unity through conversation - to respect, value and, at worst, tolerate, a vast range of differing opinions and ideas, acknowledging that there are three very important elements to building a successful community:

My current 'opinion' is that as a society we are losing the space to discuss complex ideas, instead merely discussing over-simplistic notions of 'identity'. We have somehow created a supposedly 'moral' space where it is reasonable to judge an idea because of the identify of the person that shared the idea - their sex/race/gender/wealth - rather than the quality of and evidence for the idea. Worryingly, this focus on identity becomes the very definition of the immoral prejudiced ideas that, I thought, we have been fighting for so long.

As an educator, I believe in helping discover and develop potential in everyone  and that every conversation is a space to learn. Every human being is an individual shaped by their unique life experiences and holding the spark of possibility within. The best way to support those sparks is with a community committed to doing the best for ALL of their members -  a community fighting for fairness and equality of opportunity for everyone.  This leading to the ability for us all to understand, promote and defend the space for diversity within our CommUNITY.

A lot of what we do in school, as educators, is to create spaces for conversations, dialogue and thinking. We want everyone to be exposed to the diverse and complex ideas and then be supported to  navigate this complexity to go on.  So...

We are really excited to announce that FOLG is setting up it’s own online marketplace for parents to donate and buy second-hand sportswear and equipment on a new community based app called "Grassboots".

With most donations priced between £1.00 to £5.00 it provides a fantastic opportunity to buy preloved kit for amazing value, especially during these difficult times.

So, to join up, please go to your App store and download the “Grassboots.Club" app.

When registering, link to Little Green School (FOLG) and you’re then good to go. Once an item is bought, contact the donater via the in-app messenger to arrange a collection time at the school gates...easy!

This community focussed initiative gives the school and parents a great opportunity to recycle more, reduce waste and the majority of every sale goes towards fundraising targets for FOLG... so please join up and start donating and buying!

For more information please go to: www.grassboots.club or Facebook / Instagram @grassboots.club

Attendance Award

It is generally the case that the more you attend school, the better you will do in school.

I was pleased to receive this award on behalf of the school - showing we are in the top 25% of schools for attendance.

The award came with mixed feelings - for the majority of the term we had been in the top 10% but the sickness bug and a few more unauthorised holidays did impact on this percentage.

In short, a big well done for everyone in working hard to keep fit and healthy and avoiding taking time off when unnecessary.

For everyone - let's push for top 10% this term and beyond!

Friends of Little Green would be hugely grateful if you could spend 5 minutes to connect your amazon account to amazon smile. There is no change to your amazon experience but you are able to select FOLG as a charity to support your children, school and community:  https://smile.amazon.co.uk/charity?orig=%2F

Stay safe – the dangers of frozen waters

Dear Watch Member,

Over the last few days Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue have attended water and ice incidents where people have been at risk of falling through frozen lakes and rivers due to rescuing a pet or not seeing the dangers of such activities.

Children and pets are particularly at risk when tempted to play on the ice formed on open water, and adults can find themselves at risk in attempting to save them.

Taking a nice walk in cold weather with your family, friends or dogs in tow can be really refreshing, just make sure you know some simple tips on how to stay safe in winter.

Areas with frozen lakes, ponds, canals and reservoirs can be beautiful places to visit during the winter months but all too often many people risk their lives by venturing onto frozen water.

Here are some useful tips to help you know what to do in an emergency.

Teach children not to go on the ice
Teach children not to go onto the ice under any circumstances.

Don’t go on the ice to rescue a dog
Don’t go onto ice or into the water to rescue a dog, move to somewhere that the dog will be able to climb out and call them towards you.

Keep dogs on their leads
Keep dogs on their leads when near ice and don’t throw sticks or toys onto the ice.

Only use well-lit areas
Time your walks to make the most of the daylight; if you need to walk in the evening only use well-lit areas or take a route not alongside water.

Keep back from the edge
When walking alongside water keep back from the edge.

Please visit the RLSS website on this link, to see useful tools on how to get your children talking about winter water safety: Winter Water Safety | Royal Life Saving Society UK ( RLSS UK )
