Praise Mistakes to SUCCEED!
A supportive parent sent in this NSPCC video as they felt it helped share the school's positive inclusive competitive approach experienced at Sports Day. I think all parents will relate to it one way or another...
In the words of Gail Emms, 'Losing is Learning'. The importance of supporting effort and PRAISING mistakes is clear in the research of success - see Growth Mindsets. If you really want your child to succeed - praise their effort, encourage their effort, and celebrate their mistakes - and their successes.
We'll be sharing this video in assembly with the children and asking for their experiences AND giving them a voice to share what they would like to happen when they are competing.
We also offer a space for parents to share their experiences. It would be BRILLIANT to capture some examples of when parents have praised effort and the impact this had on their children:
EXPLORERS
Our Explorer Afternoon Idea has been developing and we are excited about the many exciting opportunities these will bring. Mrs Crawford is planning a six week carousel of exciting, engaging and purposeful activities to promote the children exploring themselves, their community and their own opportunities. This will also include regular (details to confirm) opportunities for parents to come and experience and celebrate the Explorer Afternoon successes. One such success as part of our trialing was a focus on the idea of 'being good enough' - a response to an American child's poem about 'Why am I not good enough.' We took a more positive spin on this and the children in year 5 and 6 created their own slam poems with themes including:
I don't have to be popular
I am myself and I am proud
Everyone makes mistakes
I won't let others' opinions stop me from having a go and taking risks
I am me and that's good enough
I am good enough
I then asked all the children, who felt courageous enough to put their words in to action in taking a risk and performing their poem to the rest of the Year Group. On this occasion, staff supported me in selecting those children who sometimes avoid these risks for fear of what others might say. Please remember this when you watch these courageous self-penned poetry performances. We are driving the message that 'we are all good enough'. We appreciate your support!

Home Learning
At this stage in the year, we ask that Year 3 and 4 children develop and establish routine reading, spelling practice and times-table practice through using TT Rock-Stars and Lexia. We will also be developing our Learning Journal opportunities to develop greater opportunity for parental support in learning. (See next item) Finally, we will also be launching RM Maths support in the coming weeks.
For Years 5 and 6 we also ask them to complete a range of Homework taken from a Homework Menu: This is now available on the individual Year Group Website pages:
YEAR 5 Home Learning: https://sites.google.com/littlegreen.herts.sch.uk/little-green-year-5-communicat/home-learning-menu
YEAR 6 Home Learning: https://sites.google.com/littlegreen.herts.sch.uk/littlegreenyear6communications/home-learning-menu
Learning Journals
We are delighted to share our plans for developing an interactive Learning Journal and Pupil Profile plan for all children at Little Green. The journal will capture children's learning achievements and thoughts about learning, offering a reflective space to positively consider next steps and also celebrate achievements - we aim for this to include videos and pictures of learning as we develop the process. These journals will be held in the children's Google Drive so will be available to parents and children to look at and discuss.
Covid Response Change:
As the staff work hard to develop these new learning provisions, our Covid Response to uploading all of the learning for the week to Google Classroom will come to an end. Should your child be off sick and yet be well enough to complete some learning, please contact the class teacher for support resources.
Curriculum Maps
We have also updated our Curriculum maps on the website for each subject (Geography pending) so you can see what children will be learning during their time at Little Green. This is further detailed in the termly Topic Webs that each year group share with parents and which are available on the Communication pages for each Year Group.

Cheese and Wine welcome event
FOLG would like you to join their first PTA meeting of the year which will be a cheese and wine evening held in the school hall. The meeting will be held on Monday 3rd October at 7:30pm for a 7:45pm start. Please bring fundraising ideas as we would love to hear them. Everybody welcome - we look forward to seeing you then.
Stationery sets
Thank you to everyone who ordered stationery sets - it was the first time FOLG had tried this and it seemed to go relatively smoothly. All packs should have now been received by those who placed orders.
If you missed out on ordering stationery sets we have received new stock and will be opening the opportunity to order on PTA events again - the introductory price has unfortunately finished so packs will now be priced at a very competitive £8 (still far cheaper than you can source on the high street!) and can be ordered via: www.pta-events.co.uk/folg. Information of what is contained in the packs can be found at this link.
Second hand uniform
Good quality second hand uniform can be ordered from Faye via folg-uniform@littlegreen.herts.sch.uk - most items are just 50p. Send an email outlining the items you wish to order - remember to include sizes and your child's class - you will then receive an email to let you know when your items are ready to collect from the school office.

The Big Summer Survey
Good morning,
This month I launched The Big Summer Survey, a national conversation with children in England about their experiences over the summer holidays. I want every child in England to have the opportunity to take part so please share with your students.
The Big Summer Survey forms part of my Independent Review into family life which will inform the Government about the best ways to support families across the country, including what role schools can play.
Over three thousand children in England have made their voices heard so far. The survey is accessible, takes less than 10 minutes and is a great activity for children aged 7-17 to do in school as part of wider discussions about time with family and the summer holidays. The Big Summer Survey will close on 21st October.
On The Big Summer Survey page I have included the direct link to the survey, a presentation you can share with your students, FAQs, a poster, suggested tweets, newsletter text for parents and the survey in word document form.
If you have any questions, please do contact the Family Review Team at family.review@childrenscommissioner.gov.uk.
With best wishes,
Dame Rachel de Souza, Children's Commissioner for England
