One element of our ethos is our focus on Powerful Knowledge: the knowledge to open doors and make a positive contribution to the world. This Newsweb focusses on the many different forms of Powerful Knowledge we develop in novice and expert learners alike: it was a pleasure to read all of the positive comments from the adults able to attend our Reading Workshop.
I am also continually thrilled to see children sharing, building and manifesting ideas through competitions, celebrations and actions: positively contributing to their world! See below for our child-inspired Kindness Week actions.
Finally, thank you for allowing me the space to learn related to the idea of Community Conversations: One parent had the BRILLIANT suggestion to ask the children what they would like their parents to debate and discuss - watch this space!
Kindness Week Launch and beyond
Abigail and Willow had the great idea of making something we can carry around to help us remember how to deal with our emotions.
They designed and created a Zones of Regulations badge and, following feedback from the whole school, will be making a badge for everyone in Year 4 and 5.
Our Zones of Regulation teach children that emotions are normal and what to do when we have strong emotions. A very kind idea and action - well done Willow and Abigail.
Issy and Louise had the great idea of a Kindness Competition and launched the event at our Monday Assembly launching Kindness Week.
They have created ten actions for children to complete each day this week and record on their Kindness Sheet.
The completed sheets will then be added to a prize draw with the winners receiving a box of chocolates to share with the winner's class and family - kindness!
Great job Louise and Issy!
Ada, Charlotte and Nathan had the idea of creating a worry website for school inspired by the Jaqueline Wilson book of the same name. They then went to the efforts of developing the idea with support from Mr Flint and were pleased to launch the website to the whole school in Monday's Assembly.
The website is set up to be anonymous and all contributions will be vetted by our Ready to learn Room Staff Ms Borlase and Ms Turner. We did explain to the children that the website will capture emails so that staff can offer support with any more serious worries.
Well done Ada, Charlotte and Nathan!
Sometimes we can be bystanders - we don't want to step in and challenge something we think is wrong - unkind or unsafe behaviours. We are afraid or nervous the negative attention will turn to us. But, if we don't stand up, what happens then? Here is Isaac, Milo and Rishi sharing some ideas on being an upstander! Thank you boys for your powerful ideas.
Mr Hyde was fantastic and all the students were well mannered.
Feel proud that my kids go to a wonderful school.
Feedback - what the parents and carers said:
Impact: The data shows a very positive impact on our attendee adults' ability to support their children. There were also a huge range of very positive comments - thank you for this feedback! We look forward to the next event! For more detailed information on our Reading rese5rahc, take a look at the School; Development Plan on Line: School Development Plan - Researching Reading
Overall very impressed by the morning and found it extremely helpful
Brilliant session so glad I could make it (last minute - sorry!). Really interesting and so helpful to see this demonstration - amazed at how the children reflected the tonality and intonation. Will use this at home.
Really helpful and encouraging presentation and handout. Great to see the children so enthusiastic about their reading. It is obvious that a lot of care goes into choosing appropriate and appealing books for each individual child. My child has really enjoyed all the books selected for her. Thank you!

Good to see how it's done in the class!
It was great to see the children enjoying their group reading together in the school hall.
Having some of the Year 6 children talk about reading was powerful and inspirational. Mr Hyde is amazing and Little Green is lucky to have such a knowledgeable and passionate member of staff!

Powerful Knowledge as Cultural Capital
Another way to think about Powerful Knowledge is as an exposure to cultural capital - the things that are valued within a culture such as: public speaking; the ability to debate; knowledge of a certain canon of literature and poetry. At Little Green, we value our own cultural heritage whilst also recognising the benefits of exposing children to our wider national heritage and cultural capital. One way of doing this is through exposure to poetry and the experience and challenge of having to remember and perform, expressively, this cultural inheritance. We also link such experiences to wider powerful knowledge such as the ability to use technology to edit a film. Check out Year 5s' Jabberwocky poetry recitals - performed, recorded and edited by the children:
Hugo took part in his first ever Hertfordshire County swim championships having secured 9 qualifying times. Representing Watford Swim Club he made finals for all events that weren’t heat declared winners, finishing top 8 in the County for all races. He also secured silver in the 10/11 years 50m Freestyle and bronze in the 100m Individual Medley!
FOLG second-hand sports kit marketplace
We are really excited to announce that FOLG is setting up it’s own online marketplace for parents to donate and buy second-hand sportswear and equipment on a new community based app called "Grassboots". With most donations priced between £1.00 to £5.00 it provides a fantastic opportunity to buy preloved kit for amazing value, especially during these difficult times. So, to join up, please go to your App store and download the “Grassboots.Club" app. When registering, link to Little Green School (FOLG) and you’re then good to go. Once an item is bought, contact the donater via the in-app messenger to arrange a collection time at the school gates...easy! This community focussed initiative gives the school and parents a great opportunity to recycle more, reduce waste and the majority of every sale goes towards fundraising targets for FOLG... so please join up and start donating and buying!
For more information please go to: www.grassboots.club or Facebook / Instagram @grassboots.club
Stationery sets
If you missed out on ordering stationery sets we have received new stock and will be opening the opportunity to order on PTA events again - the introductory price has unfortunately finished so packs will now be priced at a very competitive £8 (still far cheaper than you can source on the high street!) and can be ordered via: www.pta-events.co.uk/folg. Information of what is contained in the packs can be found at this link.
Second hand uniform
Good quality second hand uniform can be ordered from Faye via folg-uniform@littlegreen.herts.sch.uk - most items are just 50p. Send an email outlining the items you wish to order - remember to include sizes and your child's class - you will then receive an email to let you know when your items are ready to collect from the school office.

We are delighted to welcome Tony Perez and Sarah Smith to our governing body as Parent governors. We also welcome Mr Karan Chopra and Lori Stanton as Associate Governors. We had a very useful Governor Link day on Wednesday and look forward to sharing headlines after half-term.
Please do show kindness to everyone when using all of the paths to and from school. The end of the day is always a busy time and, as requested by parents, we do have a 2-way system. Many thanks for supporting the community.
CAR PARK REMINDER
Just a polite reminder that parents should not be driving into the car park for any reason. Only Blue Badge holders should be accessing the car park. Thank you.
